Teacher Assistant/ Paraprofessional
Position Title
CITY-WIDE PARA EDUCATOR, LEARNING CENTER, CURRENTLY AT NEMS

Reports ToSpecial Education Teacher
SummaryAssist in small group and individual pupil instruction.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Assist students with instruction under the direction of the special education teacher.
- Assist teacher in maintaining discipline.
- Assist teacher with instructional activities.
- Escort students from room to room.
- Tend to student toileting when required.
- Work with both special education and regular students.
- Assist teaching staff in the implementation of IEPs.
- Supervise students while they are at recess and lunch.
- Assist students with classroom assignments.
- Copy materials for instructional purposes.
- Assist teacher in filing material and preparing all necessary paperwork.
- Alert teachers to problems that may be observed.

Education and/or Experience- High school diploma or general education degree.
- Two years of college credit or an associate’s or higher degree; or successful completion of a paraprofessional assessment which evaluates content knowledge in mathematics, reading, and writing and an understanding of how to assist in the instruction of these topics (Parapro Assessment).
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
- Ability to write simple correspondence.
- Ability to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations.
- Ability to add and subtract two‑digit numbers and to multiply and divide with tens and hundreds.
- Ability to perform these operations using units of American money, weight, volume, and distance.
- Basic knowledge of and experience with job‑related computer hardware and software applications.
- Apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uncomplicated written or oral instructions.
- Deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Skills and Abilities
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community.
- Perform duties with awareness of district requirements and Board of Education policies.
- Regularly required to sit, talk, or hear.
- Regularly required to stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Must be able to push items up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.
- Requires use of close, distance, and peripheral vision.
- Noise level typical of classrooms with school children; a standard acceptable level for this environment.
- Work throughout the school building, on school grounds, and occasionally off campus.
- Responsible for the safety and well‑being of students in charge.
Salary range: $22.12 – $25.18 (per contractual agreement BPS Contracts).
Work hours:
6.5 hours per day (7:45 am to 2:45 pm).
26 – 27 syndicate year.
