Grade 6 Science Teacher
To create a flexible elementary grade program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with pupils; to motivate pupils to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge in accordance with each pupil's ability and to establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members.
Essential duties and responsibilities include:
- Instructing pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
- Developing lesson plans and instructional materials and providing individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
- Establishing and maintaining standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
- Evaluating pupils' academic and social growth, keeping appropriate records and preparing progress reports.
- Communicating with parents through conferences and other means to discuss pupil's progress and interpret the school program.
- Identifying pupil needs and cooperating with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude and learning problems.
- Creating an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards and interest centers.
- Maintaining professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected growth activities.
- Supervising pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
- Administering group standardized tests in accordance with the district testing program.
- Participating in curriculum development programs as required.
- Participating in faculty committees and the sponsorship of pupil activities.
- Implementing an individual education program for special needs students.
- Bachelor Degree. (Masters Degree for certain positions).
- Additional credits required for completion of certification requirements.
- Valid Connecticut Teaching Certificate.
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and governmental regulations.
- Ability to write memos, reports and correspondence.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents and the general public.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
- Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
- Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
- Basic knowledge and experience with standard hardware and software applications.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
- Ability to apply knowledge of current research and teaching competencies to instructional programs.
- Ability to plan and implement lessons based on school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies and the code of professional responsibility for teachers.
Supervisory responsibilities include supervising classroom and students (aides, volunteers and parent helpers where appropriate) and performing general supervisory duties as scheduled.
Qualification requirements include:
Physical demands include standing, talking or hearing, walking, sitting, pushing or lifting up to fifty (50) pounds, and close vision abilities.
Work environment is moderate to loud, performed indoors and occasionally outdoors.
Salary:
As per negotiated contract BPS Contracts.
