City Wide Resource Para educator

Currently located at Bristol Central High School

Assist in small group and individual pupil instruction.

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

  • Assisting students with instruction under the direction of the special education teacher
  • Assisting teacher in maintaining discipline
  • Assisting teacher with instructional activities
  • Escorting students from room to room
  • Toileting students is sometimes required
  • Involves work with both special education and regular students
  • Assisting teaching staff in the implementation of IEP
  • Supervising students while they are at recess and lunch
  • Assisting students with classroom assignments
  • Copying materials for instructional purposes
  • Assisting teacher in filing material and preparing all necessary paperwork
  • Alerting teachers to problems that may be observed
  • May require supporting with toileting of students
  • Qualification requirements:

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required:

    Education and/or experience:

    • High School Diploma or General Education Degree. Two years of college credit OR hold an associate's (or higher) degree; OR successful completion of a paraprofessional assessment which assesses content knowledge in mathematics, reading and writing and an understanding of how to assist in the instruction of these topics (Parapro Assessment).

    Language skills:

    • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.
    • Ability to write simple correspondence.
    • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.

    Mathematical skills:

    • Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10s and 100s.
    • Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.

    Computer skills:

    • Basic knowledge and experience with job related computer hardware and software applications.

    Reasoning ability:

    • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
    • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

    Other skills and abilities:

    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.
    • Ability to perform duties with awareness of district requirements and Board of Education policies.

    Physical demands:

    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, and talk or hear.
    • The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
    • The employee must be able to push items of fifty (50) pounds, such as pushing children on a bike or wheelchair or moving/rearranging furniture.
    • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds. When doing heavier lifting, the employee should do so with assistance.
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and peripheral vision.

    Work environment:

    • The noise level in the work environment is typical of classrooms having school children and is a standard acceptable level for this environment.
    • This employee will work throughout the school building, on school grounds and occasionally off campus.
    • The paraprofessional is responsible for the safety and well being of students in his/her charge.

    Salary:
    Range $22.12 - $25.18 (Per contractual agreement BPS Contracts)

    Work hours:

    6.5 hours per day (7:20am to 2:20pm)
