PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT

SUMMARY:

Diagnose repairs with software programs; determine the failure, and repair in a safe and effective manor. Repairs and maintains gasoline and diesel powered motor vehicles, construction equipment, street maintenance equipment, and other miscellaneous equipment. Overhauls major operating units such as motors, transmissions, and differentials; dismantles units and inspects parts, and makes necessary adjustments. Repairs air conditioning, electrical, hydraulic and braking systems.

Performs oxygen acetylene cutting, welding and brazing, and electromagnetic arc welding and brazing. Performs complete body work and spray painting on vehicles and other equipment. Performs test drives. May respond to road calls and operate equipment for repairs. Must have ability to work after hours if required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Requires High School graduate or GED with 5 years' experience in diesel and gas engines, heavy duty trucks, automobiles, construction equipment, hydraulic and air braking systems, and computerized diagnostic programs. Must have experience in making major and minor repairs. Knowledge of automated rubbish trucks preferred. Requires effective communication skills.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Both inside and outside. Exposed to weather, fumes, odors, and dust. May be exposed to toxic conditions. Risk of bodily injury. Perform duties in extreme and all types of weather conditions. Occasionally conduct driving on roadways, highways, etc.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Heavy manual work. Ability to regularly lift, carry, and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift, carry, and/or move up to 100 pounds.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:
Requires Valid Connecticut Commercial Driver's License (CDL) that includes the minimum Sub-Classification "B" and valid CDL Medical Card. ASE certification is desirable.

WORK SCHEDULE/CLASSIFICATION:
Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., full-time position, 40 hours per week.

WAGES:
Starting $34.58/hr. (Increases to $35.22 @6 months, $35.82 @1 year.)
