position title: licensed electrician - citywide

reports to: maintenance/facilities supervisor

summary: performs skilled electrical work in the maintenance, repair and renovation of school buildings and facilities, including therein all electrical fixtures and performs general maintenance work as needed.

essential duties and responsibilities:

  • receives oral or written work order from supervisor
  • studies building plans, blueprints, diagrams or drawings to determine equipment, tools and materials required.
  • estimates time and materials cost.
  • assists in estimating major renovation jobs.
  • supervises assigned helpers as required.
  • plans layout, installs and repairs wiring, electrical fixtures and apparatus.
  • prepares sketches showing location of wiring and equipment or follows diagrams or blueprints to ensure that concealed wiring is installed before completion of future walls, ceilings and flooring.
  • installs control and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays and circuit breaker panels.
  • connects power cables to equipment and installs grounding leads.
  • tests continuity of circuit to insure electrical compatibility and safety of components using testing instruments such as ohmmeter, battery and buzzer oscilloscope.
  • observes functioning of equipment or systems to detect hazards and need for adjustments, relocation or replacement.
  • uses hand tools of trade and related power equipment, including drills and welding machine.
  • follows all applicable safety procedures.
  • reports work accomplished orally and in writing to supervisor.
  • is available for work beyond regular hours and performs general maintenance work and all other duties as may be assigned by supervisor.
  • prepares and follows a preventative maintenance schedule.
  • inspects equipment, facilities and recommends repair or replacement action to supervisor.
  • coordinates work with building custodian, department head or principal.
  • assists in emergency maintenance operations.
  • instructs custodians and maintenance workers on the proper use of tools used in electrical repairs.
  • maintains all safety and code requirements.
  • performs general maintenance work as needed.
  • performs ground maintenance work as needed.
qualification requirements:

education and/or experience:

high school diploma or general education degree (ged) preferred. Connecticut motor vehicle license - class ii license desirable. State electrical license - e2 journeyman license required. Extensive work background in fire alarm installation and troubleshooting. Experience in installation and repair of emergency lighting and generating systems. Completion of an approved apprentice program desirable. Three (3) years of experience at the journeyman level desirable.

skills:

ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups and other employees.

mathematical skllls:

ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with l os and l 00s. Ability to perform these operations using units of american money and weight measurement, volume and distance.

computer skills:

basic knowledge and experience with job related computer hardware and software applications.
