Girls Volleyball Assistant Coach
Location: Bristol Eastern High School
Reports To: Building Principal / Supervisor of Athletics
Summary: To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success while at the same time helping the athlete to achieve an appreciation for the values of discipline, sportsmanship, and an increased level of self-esteem.
Responsibilities- Has full responsibility for the overall supervision of the program, including the junior varsity and freshman teams.
- Is in charge of assignments and duties of assistant coaches working in the sport.
- Is responsible for the general upkeep, protection, and inventory of the equipment and uniforms used in the sport.
- Ensures that assistant coaches and themselves are aware of and comply with existing state and league regulations.
- Assists the athletic coordinator in providing transportation and requirements for tournament and special sport events.
- Attends all league meetings regarding scheduling and rule updates specific to the sport.
- Develops schedules for all levels of play and communicates all schedule changes to the Director of Athletics or athletic coordinator.
- Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment storage areas.
- Prepares scheduled sport events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times.
- Makes recommendations for awards and clarifies award policy to athletes.
- Participates in budgeting with the Director of Athletics, establishes requirements for the next season, explains equipment guidelines, and operates within the established budget.
- Has thorough knowledge of policies and procedures in the student‑athlete handbook and CIAC handbook and reinforces rules of training, code of conduct, and eligibility rules.
- Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by the staff.
- Has a good understanding of NCAA recruiting rules for the sport.
- Monitors equipment rooms and coaches’ office to ensure athletes are only in authorized areas and never leaves athletes unsupervised during scheduled practices.
- Examines locker rooms, equipment rooms, and playing areas before and after team use to check general cleanliness and safety.
- Secures all doors, lights, windows, gates, locks, and alarms when leaving the building or outside facility when custodians are not on duty.
- Evaluates assistant coaches and programs and submits postseason reports to the Director of Athletics at season end.
- Is responsible for the actions and conduct of the team under their jurisdiction.
- Ensures the general health and welfare of student‑athletes in the sport.
- Communicates instructions and commands using clear, simple, and positive language.
- Pays appropriate attention to injured or ill athletes and follows the protocol set by the athletic department for injured athletes.
- Organizes pre‑season meetings for players and coaches.
- Evaluates performance of student‑athletes and provides suitable feedback, balancing critique with positive and motivating comments.
- Maintains good public relations with media, parents, officials, opponents, and fans.
- Instills respect for equipment and school property, its care, and use.
- Directs student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
- Maintains current Connecticut coaching certification with the State of Connecticut Department of Education.
- Performs other duties consistent with the nature of the position and may be requested by the Director of Athletics and/or principal.
- Valid Connecticut coaching certification or temporary emergency coaching permit.
- Updated CPR/First Aid training approved by Connecticut State Department of Education.
- Ability to organize and supervise a comprehensive sports program.
- Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport.
- All supervisory responsibilities must be fulfilled; students must be supervised at all times.
- Ability to read, interpret directions, write reports, and communicate effectively with students, parents, and other staff.
