Job Overview
The State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). is accepting applications for CDL Driver/Highway Maintenance Worker (Transportation Maintainer
2) positions in Groton, Haddam, Norwich, Old Saybrook, Waterford, CT.
Working hours:
Monday–Friday, 40 hours per week, first shift 7:30 AM–4:00 PM.
Applicants must live within 30 miles of the garage location for the desired workplace.
Position Requirements- Hold a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A or B with Tanker and Airbrakes endorsement;
Tanker endorsement must be held at the time of hire. - Possess a valid Medical Examiners Card (MEC).
- Provide license number, class, expiration date, and issuing state in the “Licenses and Professional Certifications” section of your application.
CDL Drivers selected for bridge work must meet OSHA Standard requirements:
- Be medically cleared for a respirator.
- Cannot have facial hair.
- Meet equipment weight requirement.
- Work required at night.
Military members and recently honorably discharged veterans with at least two years of commercial motor vehicle experience may qualify under the CDL Skills Test Exemption for Military Applicants.
Responsibilities- Perform a full range of construction, maintenance, and repair tasks for state roads, bridges, airports, and departmental facilities.
- Operate and maintain small and complex mechanical equipment, including:
- Three to nine‑ton trucks, dump, platform, or refuse vehicles.
- Snow plows, duo dump trucks, crash attenuators, trailers, towed equipment, hopper spreaders, bridge utility trucks, compressor trucks, aerial bucket trucks, wreckers with winch, tandem/10‑wheel dump trucks.
- Pickup trucks (two‑wheel and four‑wheel drive) with towing and hopper spreader attachments.
- Assist with snow and ice removal, emergency duties, and mandatory winter overtime (November 1–April 30).
- Remain on site for the duration of storms, which may last several days including holidays and weekends.
- Provide back‑up support to supervisors on reports, radio communications, and vehicle inspections.

Employees may be tasked with operating and maintaining equipment such as:
- Bituminous curbing machines
- Pothole patchers
- Tractor mowers with single flail
- Wood chippers
- Chainsaws
- Culvert cleaning machines
- Compressors and compressor tools
- Concrete mixers, vibrators
- Hydraulic or engine‑driven tools
- Concrete testing (boring)
- Class 24 tractors with attachments
- Forklifts
- Knowledge of road and bridge construction, maintenance, and repair techniques.
- Understanding of materials and processes used in construction trades.
- Interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to perform routine repairs on complex mechanical equipment.
- Proficiency in operating listed equipment and in using computer software.
One (1) year of experience in construction, landscaping, commercial driving, snow plowing, or maintenance/repair of roadsides, roadways, bridges, or airports.
Substitutions for the minimum experience may include:
- Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma in a maintenance trade.
- Completion of the Transportation Maintenance Registered Apprenticeship Program approved by the Department of Administrative Services.
- Experience with snow removal.
- Experience with landscaping.
- Experience with construction.
- Experience driving CDL vehicles.
- Maintain current licenses, permits, and certifications as required.
- Accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, when services are required.
Physical Requirements
- Background investigation may be required.
- Must possess adequate strength, stamina, agility, visual and auditory acuity, and maintain physical fitness for duties.
- Physical examination will be required.
- Exposure to extreme weather, heavy lifting, hazardous traffic conditions, working at heights on bridges.
- Potential exposure to poison ivy, insect bites, allergy irritants.
- Potential noise from loud machinery.
- May be required to complete an asbestos removal program and use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
