Roger Williams University School of Law invites applications for a full-time Professor of Academic Success. The Professor of Academic Success will provide leadership in the development, implementation, and assessment of academic support programs designed to promote student learning, academic achievement, bar examination success, and professional development.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively with faculty, administrators, and student support professionals to enhance student performance throughout the law school curriculum and to foster an inclusive learning environment that supports the success of a diverse student body.
Teaching and Faculty ResponsibilitiesDesign, implement, and continuously improve academic success programming for law students.
Teach courses and workshops focused on legal analysis, legal reasoning, exam preparation, academic skills, bar readiness, and professional competencies.
Provide individualized academic counseling and coaching to students experiencing academic challenges or seeking to enhance academic performance.
Develop and deliver programming to support first-year students' transition to legal education.
Collaborate with faculty to identify student learning needs and develop interventions that promote academic achievement.
Analyze student performance data and other assessment measures to evaluate program effectiveness and guide continuous improvement.
Support bar examination preparation through curricular and co-curricular initiatives.
Work closely with the Dean, Associate Deans, faculty, and student affairs professionals to advance student success objectives.
Participate in faculty governance, committee service, and institutional initiatives consistent with faculty status.
Engage in professional development, and faculty service activities.
Student Counseling and GuidanceAdvise an assigned cohort of students on course selection.
Serve as academic advisor for students to enhance their likelihood of successfully passing the bar exam the first time. As academic advisor, review and approve course registration each semester for adequate coverage of bar courses and provide other academic support, in conjunction with the Director of Academic Excellence and the Director of Writing, to improve analytical and writing skills necessary to pass the bar exam.
AdditionalFunctions
Attend and participate in events at the School of Law, including but not limited to Pre-Orientation and Orientation, Commencement, Accepted Students Day, Faculty Meetings, and a variety of educational and social events for faculty, students, and alumni.
Participate in School of Law governance and serve on committees which may be established by the Dean and Faculty.
Attend local and national conferences with respect to academic support and legal education.
Job Requirements- J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school.
- Admission to practice law in at least one United States jurisdiction.
- Demonstrated excellence in legal education, academic support, bar preparation, legal writing, teaching, student advising, or related fields.
- Minimum of five years of relevant work experience, either in the law school academic support field or academic teaching.
- Excellent interpersonal communication and presentation skills with a special focus on communicating effectively with students, including those from traditionally underrepresented groups and those with varying abilities.
- Commitment to student success, educational equity, and inclusive excellence.
- Experience teaching in a law school setting.
- Experience directing or participating in academic success, bar preparation, or student support programs.
- Familiarity with evidence-based educational practices, learning theory, and assessment methodologies.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.
