Substitute Bus Drivers - Special Education Job Description

This is a part-time, as needed position that does not include benefits. Opportunity to earn a $500 supplement by obtaining or renewing your commercial driver's license per BTCS guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma preferred.
  • Valid commercial driver’s license issued by the State Department of Safety with appropriate endorsements.
  • Valid operator’s license with not less than five years of unrestricted driving experience.
  • File a physical examination with the transportation coordinator upon employment, using the form supplied by the State Commissioner of Education (annual requirement).
  • Substitute drivers must meet all qualifications and requirements for regular drivers.
  • Other qualifications acceptable as determined by the Board.
Reports To

Transportation & Attendance Director

Job Goal

To provide safe and efficient transportation services for designated groups of students to and from their assigned schools or other designated points.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Operate the vehicle safely and obey all state and local traffic regulations.
  • When not operating the vehicle, provide assistance to students and help maintain student safety.
  • Maintain a neat appearance, be courteous to parents and children, and cooperate with teachers and school officials.
  • Participate in required state-sponsored safety classes to maintain appropriate certifications.
  • Wear seat belt at all times when available.
  • Remain on the bus while students are on the bus, including loading and unloading.
  • Promote safety habits with the group of students being transported.
  • Report any student misconduct to the principal of the respective school.
  • Transport only authorized students and disembark at authorized stops.
  • Report all accidents to the appropriate law enforcement agency and complete any required reports.
  • Refrain from profanity or tobacco use while children are being transported.
  • Refrain from operating while under the influence of intoxicants.
  • Maintain a clean vehicle.
  • Meet with the director of transportation annually or as necessary to receive student assignments.
  • Complete daily routes in a timely fashion.
  • Notify the director of transportation upon absence and arrange for a qualified substitute if possible.
  • Arrange routine maintenance of the vehicle with the school district mechanic.
  • Maintain adequate fuel for all daily runs (fuel not purchased while students are in the vehicle).
  • Perform other duties as reasonably prescribed by the Transportation & Attendance Director, Student Services Supervisor, or Director of Schools.
