Description
A content teacher provides daily instruction to students with a disability in an assigned academic, vocational, or social and emotional area. The teacher’s lesson plans and instruction are consistent with the academic content standards as outlined by the Ohio Department of Education. The content teacher collaborates with the Intervention Specialist to ensure students receive their accommodations or modified curriculum as determined by the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP).

- Proactively communicate with supervisor & team to problem solve concerns or questions.
- Attend meetings as directed by the IS.
- Collaborate with the team on the development of plans and classroom activities weekly.
- Collaborates with classroom staff and IS to develop upcoming IEPs.
- Assure consistency among staff through observations and check-ins.
- Supervise students in his/her care at all times.
- Meet with the IS and classroom team weekly to discuss student progress and skill acquisition.
- Meet the individual needs of students by individualizing instruction within the classroom environment.
- Interpret the abilities and disabilities of these students, assists in classroom intervention strategies, modifies general education curriculum as necessary, and assists the student with class assignments.
- Create lesson plans according to Ohio Academic content standards and or extended Ohio academic content standards.
- Prepare materials and implement lesson plans.
- Integrate technology.
- Communicate and work with parents regarding academic, behavioral, emotional and social concerns.
- Complete daily communication log for students.
- Follow student behavior intervention plans and collect data accordingly.
- Show evidence of a positive learning environment through classroom support, strategies, and implementing a variety of teaching methods.
- Assist and encourage students in developing their academic and social potential.
- Ensure the safety of students by accompanying them across learning settings during the school day or school activities as assigned.
- Carry out all policies and procedures in a professional manner as outlined in STEPS policies and procedures manual.
- Contribute to the cleanliness and maintenance of the assigned classroom including organizing materials and teaching stimuli, sterilizing toys and surface areas, placing trash in designated area to be collected, and other daily needs to ensure a clean learning environment.
- Attend professional in-services in areas related to job responsibilities.
- Willingly share information/expertise with colleagues.
- Read current information in professional publications to remain abreast of educational research.
- Ensure STEPS Educational Group confidentiality agreement for students is maintained.
- Teach and act in accordance with the objectives and policies of STEPS Educational Group as directed by the supervisor.
- Meet all deadlines for turning in required paperwork (including but not limited to IEP data, behavior data, notebook checks, field trip paperwork, quarterly progress reports, service records, time sheets etc.).
- Complete paperwork in a neat and legible manner.
- Complete all required training.
- Maintain integrity of STEPS Educational Group Guiding Principles Model.
- Complete other related tasks as assigned.
- Preferred license and/or significant experience in specific content.
- Preferred Bachelor’s degree in special education.
- Ability to design effective programs for diverse children.
- Completion of criminal background check.
- Outstanding communication skills.
- Excellent observation and analytical skills.
- Available to work extended hours to have meetings with parents.
- Must be able to be compliant with ODE and ODJFS.
- Candidate must possess strong time management and organizational skills.
- Candidate must have the ability to problem solve with other staff members.
- Position involves some degree of physical interaction with students who have difficulty controlling physical behavior.
- Must be able to use a variety of equipment for children with special needs.
- Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer and other office equipment.
- Must occasionally lift, move and/or support up to 50 pounds (and/or up to adult size body weight with two-to-three person lift).
