REPORTING TO: Service Manager EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: Non-exempt / hourly

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Flat Rate Technician (Tech) supports VIP’s mission to EARN AUTOMOTIVE CUSTOMERS FOR LIFE by living the VIP culture and following VIP processes to ensure customers receive an exceptional experience. The Tech works effectively and safely, communicating and collaborating with the team to serve customers. Responsibilities include diagnosing automotive systems, repairing and replacing parts, fluids, tires, and accessories, and ensuring services are performed correctly the first time.

The Tech must comply with company safety, loss prevention, customer service programs, and all relevant regulations.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Prioritize workplace safety: follow safety policies, complete training, lock out unsafe equipment, and report unsafe conditions.
  • Provide automotive system diagnosis, repair, and maintenance for all ASE certified systems:
    • A1 – Engine Repair
    • A2 – Automatic Transmission/Transaxle
    • A3 – Manual Drive Train & Axles
    • A4 – Suspension & Steering
    • A5 – Brakes
    • A6 – Electrical/Electronic Systems
    • A7 – Heating & Air Conditioning
    • A8 – Engine Performance
  • Ensure a valid Service Work Order is initiated and displayed before servicing a vehicle.
  • Complete an MPI before servicing each vehicle and support the 5‑for‑5 Customer Engagement Process.
  • Return Service Work Order and printouts to the Service Desk with vehicle keys after completion.
  • Obtain needed parts only from the Desk Team; return unused parts to the Desk Team after service.
  • Return cores, batteries, and used tires to designated security areas.
  • Maintain a minimum 16‑week average productivity:
    Technician 80%, ASE Technician 90%, Master Technician 100%.
  • Adhere to VIP’s quality service policies to meet VIP quality standards.
  • Complete all required training and certification:
    • Pass all required LMS training and safe equipment operation training.
    • Become a Licensed State Vehicle Inspector (state‑specific requirement).
    • Become T.I.A. basic automotive tire service (BATS) certified and T.I.A. advanced TPMS certified.
    • Obtain ASE certification based on position:
      • Technician: G1, A4 and A5.
      • ASE Technician:
        Four of the A‑Series ASE certifications.
      • Master Technician:
        All eight A‑Series A1–A8.
  • Train, support, and deliver the 5‑for‑5 process to educate customers about their vehicle’s condition.
  • Attend meetings and training sessions as needed (typically several times per year).
QUALITY, SAFETY & HOUSEKEEPING RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Road‑test vehicles after service to ensure safe and satisfactory operation.
  • Secure and lock customer vehicles when returning them to the parking lot.
  • Install seat and steering wheel covers and floor mats before entering customers’ vehicles.
  • Maintain a clean work area clear of debris, cores, unused parts, and stray tools.
  • Clean shop equipment immediately after use by removing debris, grease, chemicals, etc.
  • Participate in daily and weekly shop maintenance programs as designated by Service Management.
  • Comply with established safety and loss prevention programs, including protective eyewear.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES (PERFORMS OTHER FUNCTIONS AS REQUIRED)
  • Maintain technical capabilities to ensure safe use of service equipment and maintain ASE certification status.
  • Review and authorize time worked and attendance records in DAYFORCE daily and weekly.
  • Comply with the provisions of VIP’s culture and service standards.
  • Participate actively in team meetings.
  • Work with the Service Manager to ensure shop equipment safe operation standards are met.
  • Comply with regulations governing disposal of hazardous waste.
FACILITY AND EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE
  • Ensure the facility’s maintenance, appearance, and condition comply with security, safety, and environmental codes and ordinances.
  • Ensure equipment is maintained in satisfactory condition so the team has the resources needed to meet customer needs.
  • Maintain a clean service department throughout the business day.
  • Enter any facility or equipment issues into the facility or equipment database.
PROCEDURAL COMPLIANCE
