This position requires a flexible schedule, including availability for evening shifts and Saturdays.

Position Summary:

Under the general and direct supervision of the Dental Director, provides oral hygiene services to patients with special emphasis on prevention of gingival and periodontal disease, as well as the provision of oral health education.

Principal

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provides oral hygiene cleaning.
  • An accurate Periodontal-Charting will be completed in EDR on all patients once per year and before all required procedures.
  • Prepares patients for dental treatment.
  • Takes blood pressure and pulse rates as required.
  • Keeps treatment areas clean and organized.
  • Provides needed patient services as prescribed and allowed by law.
  • Assists the dental assistant with sterilization and inventory.
  • Keeps instruments sharpened and in working order.
  • Takes, develops and mounts all required x-rays.
  • Interacts with other disciplines within BNHC, providing a resource for medical providers and social workers.
  • Maintains confidentiality at all times.
  • Is pleasant, courteous, and considerate of patients, co-workers, and external professional contacts.
  • Demonstrates ability to prioritize demands, work with distractions, adapt to change, exercise efficient time management, and work independently.
  • Maintains appropriate chain of command.
  • Participates in continuing education for personal and professional growth.
  • Attends required staff meetings.
  • Communicates effectively with supervisor, staff, and management.
  • Participates in development of short range and long-range strategic planning of dental services.
  • Standards of Care:

  • Patient medical history to be reviewed at every visit.
  • Provider will create excellent and accurate progress notes in EDR.
  • Pain scale will be completed every visit.
  • Consent forms will be completed and reviewed prior to treatment.
  • Treatment provided will be billed accurately and appropriately.
  • These duties should be performed within the direction of state of Massachusetts License Board.
  • Productivity:

  • Hygienists are expected to provide a minimum of 1,800 visits a year (based on a 1.0 FTE).
  • Hygienists are expected to produce a minimum of $25,000 in revenue per month (based on a 1.0 FTE).
  • Working Conditions &

    Physical Requirements:

    Works in a busy community health center in a high crime, urban neighborhood. Interruptions are present and can be disruptive to workflow. Stress is present due to high volume of work, diversified nature of activities and frequent crises and deadlines. Performs other employee duties to cover staff absences. Works overtime as needed for emergencies or to meet project deadlines.

    The individual must be in good health of mind and body with the physical dexterity and vision suitable to accomplish the job duties outlined above. Knowledge of proper patient transfer assistance is also required and the ability to lift as much as 25 pounds may be necessary.

    As part of the direct responsibilities, the employee will have direct exposure to toxic chemicals and infectious materials.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Skills & Knowledge:

    Requires certification in dental hygiene procedures with a license to practice in Massachusetts.

    One year of experience as a practicing dental hygienist. Duties as a dental hygienist require ability to perform according to generally accepted principles independent of supervision.
