The Boston College School of Social Work (BCSSW) is inviting applications for Adjunct Faculty - Field Advisor positions on an open and rolling basis.

BCSSW prepares social work professionals to practice transformative, evidence-based interventions to improve the most vulnerable lives, focusing on training leaders to advance equity, justice, and inclusion in diverse communities across the globe. The MSW Program offers courses in fields-of-practice that include Afrocentric Social Work, Children, Youth & Families, Global Practice, Health, Latinx Communities, and Mental Health.

Role Summary

The Field Advisor is an essential role in the Boston College School of Social Work Field Education Department. All BCSSW Students are assigned a Field Advisor as instructor of record to monitor and support student success. The Field Advisor serves as a liaison between the school, student, and the affiliated agency to operationalize requirements for the field education course. The Advisor meets with students, individually and/or in a group, regularly to monitor, evaluate and provide guidance to students in both course work and field placement.

Students are responsible for attending all scheduled meetings with their Advisor. Students are encouraged to schedule meetings for advising as needed and to check in regularly in person, by virtual meetings, by phone, and email. The Advisor is responsible for responding to problems in the field placement presented by the student or the field agency and will make additional visits to the field placement as needed to address any concerns and to ensure that the student's educational needs are being met.

The schedule of advisor responsibilities is outlined below:

Essential Functions:

Curriculum Instruction and Assessment

  • Weekly availability for Student contact, either by phone, virtual meeting, email or in person; responsive to students as needed for urgent matters
  • Determine that weekly individual supervision is occurring
  • Review how the learning contract is developing and advise students on changes to the contract
  • Determine that the Student has adequate cases and project assignments
  • Answer any questions on Field Education requirements
  • Complete Site Visits
  • Hold 6 First Year Experience Seminars
  • Review and approve student learning contracts
  • Conduct 1 site visit minimum each semester- mid fall, mid spring; more if needed if concerns arise and placement needs additional support
  • Responsive to all parties as needed for urgent matters
  • Review students’ written assignments for Field Ed Portfolio; some are submitted directly to Advisor; others to supervisor with overview by Advisor before grading period
  • Review final year students’ paperwork submitted for the Competency Assessment Portfolio
  • Collect student performance evaluations and submit written report of each student’s progress and performance at the end of the academic cycle
  • Conduct 5 seminars for First Year students over the academic year; seminar content provided by Field admin; location can be at students’ placement sites, Boston College or other location convenient to you and students
  • Attend monthly advisor meetings at Boston College,
  • Attend Academic Standards Review Committee Meetings (ASRC) if appropriate
  • Office space, phone extension and computer access available at BC in McGuinn Hall

Salary Rate: $8,055 per semster for a full advising load of 14 students. Compensation is pro-rated for a lesser/greater advising load.

Training and Continuing Education

  • Maintain appropriate and relevant credentials for practice area
  • Complete Boston College Human Resources Training
  • Complete Boston College School of Social Work professional development seminars

Reporting Relationship:
Reports to Assistant Dean, Field Education

Supervisory Responsibility:
No Supervisory Responsibility
