Position

Medical Interpreter – Boston Medical Center South

Schedule

40 Hours, Days/Evenings (11:30 AM-8:00 PM)/Rotating weekends (8:00 AM-4:30 PM). Full Time, Benefit Eligible.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as a medical interpreter for patients and staff under direction of Manager of Interpreter Services.
  • Conduct consecutive, simultaneous, or sight translation for all patients and family members who are LEP, Deaf, or hard of hearing.
  • Relay medical information between speakers of different languages while maintaining patient confidentiality and informed consent.
  • Meet competencies listed in IMIA Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics.
  • Support department operations and assist with compliance to office and hospital policies.
Qualifications
  • Fluency in English and one or more foreign languages; primary requirement Cape Verdean Creole/Portuguese, Spanish preferred.
  • Ability to work in consecutive mode and sight translate into and from the two working languages.
  • High level of customer service and positive approach.
  • Familiarity with cultural and socio‑economic diversity of patients.
  • High school diploma or GED; bachelor’s degree or equivalent preferred.
  • Proof of medical interpreter training – minimum 40 hours.
  • At least 1 year of experience in a healthcare setting as a medical interpreter with strong medical vocabulary.
  • National Board Certification for spoken language interpreters within 6 months of hire (certifiedmedicalinterpreters.org).
  • Working knowledge of computer systems.
Compensation & Benefits

Salary range: $20.65–$30.68 per hour. Compensation considered based on education, experience, and licensure.
