Position: Psychiatric Registered Nurse, Brockton Behavioral Health Center, 24 Hours (Days)

Position Summary
Boston Medical Center is seeking a Psychiatric Nurse for its 82‑bed behavioral health hospital in Brockton, MA. The role involves direct patient care, nursing assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, evaluation, and coordination of care for psychiatric patients. The nurse works under the general direction of the Nurse Manager and collaborates with a multidisciplinary team.

Essential Responsibilities / Duties
  • Consistently and effectively utilize all steps of the nursing process to provide timely, safe, efficient, and appropriate patient-centered care.
  • Assess patients and families systematically, collect pertinent data, prioritize information, and involve patients, families, and behavioral health providers in the assessment process.
  • Identify emergency or crisis situations, communicate promptly to the team, and respond appropriately.
  • Analyze assessment data to determine appropriate nursing diagnoses, using critical thinking skills.
  • Identify expected outcomes individualized to each patient, develop measurable goals, and collaborate with patients, significant others, and the care team.
  • Develop and document an individualized plan of care that reflects the patient’s condition, prioritizes needs, and utilizes available resources.
  • Implement interventions based on the plan, prioritize patient needs, delegate tasks to co‑workers, ensure a safe unit environment, administer medications per protocols, and educate patients and families.
  • Evaluate patient progress, conduct reassessments, modify diagnoses and outcomes as needed, and provide follow‑up care.
  • Participate in quality improvement, cost‑containment initiatives, and professional development activities.
  • Act in a professional manner, maintain compliance with regulations, and resolve peer conflicts constructively.
  • Maintain current knowledge through continuing education, mandatory certifications (BLS, ACLS if required), and active participation in unit or departmental committees.
  • Support peer professional development through knowledge sharing, feedback, and serving as a resource for new employees.
  • Collaborate with clients, significant others, and health care providers to coordinate referrals, discharge planning, and other interdisciplinary activities.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, including acting as shift charge nurse when requested.
Education and Licensure
  • Associate’s Degree in Nursing required.
  • BSN required within four years of hire.
  • Licensed to practice professional nursing in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (reciprocity available).
  • Current BLS certification required; ACLS may be required for certain practice areas.
Experience

Varies depending on unit/department needs.

Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of professional nursing principles, procedures, and techniques applicable to psychiatric care.
  • Knowledge of social, psychological, and physical factors of psychiatric disorders.
  • Knowledge of psychotropic medications and their side effects.
  • Knowledge of State and Federal regulations governing inpatient psychiatric care.
  • Knowledge of crisis prevention and de‑escalation principles.
  • Effective leadership in high‑stress situations with sensitivity and diplomacy.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including electronic health records.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills; ability to delegate effectively.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Physical ability to meet core job responsibilities and manage stress related to patient care.
  • Multilingual skills (beyond English) preferred.
Compensation Range

$36.15–$75.50 per hour. The range reflects minimum qualifications; additional factors such as education, experience, and licensure influence the final offer. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, pharmacy, paid time off, career advancement, and more.
