Overview
POSITION SUMMARY:
The licensed and credentialed Nurse Practitioner (NP) reports to the Collaborating Physician and the Administrative Director and provides diagnosis, treatment, consultation, and follow-up under physician direction in the clinic or inpatient setting. The NP performs age- and specialty-appropriate physical exams and preventive health measures within prescribed guidelines and is responsible for applying the nursing process, supervising clinical practice, research involvement, consultative services, inter/intradepartmental liaison, education, leadership, and patient care management across the health care continuum from preventative care through discharge.

Schedule:
Full Time.
- Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to patients and families according to established collaborative protocols and standards of care.
- Sets priorities for appropriate and efficient management of patient care reflecting cost-aware use of time, resources, supplies, and equipment.
- Performs physical examinations and provides preventive health measures within guidelines appropriate to patient needs.
- Orders, interprets, and evaluates laboratory and diagnostic tests to assess patient problems and health care needs.
- Based on diagnostic, lab, and assessment findings, arranges for the appropriate plan of care and follow-up.
- Records pertinent patient care findings in the medical record.
- Maintains an interdisciplinary approach to planning and communicating patient care information with physicians and other health care professionals.
- Evaluates outcomes of patient care and makes necessary revisions in care plans.
- Seeks and provides consultative services as required.
- Through patient education and counseling, incorporates health maintenance, prevention, and promotion concepts into daily practice.
- Demonstrates awareness of community resources and assists patients and families in utilizing them effectively.
- Notifies supervisor when patients in age groups not regularly served present and seeks assistance from specialists for those age groups.
- NPs providing inpatient care may provide surgical assistance and non-surgical procedures.
- In collaboration with appropriate physicians, assists in developing, implementing, evaluating, and revising NP guidelines, policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Demonstrates leadership in problem solving and directing designated personnel in the clinical area.
- Maintains current knowledge of legislation affecting health care delivery and NP practice in hospital and clinic settings.
- Serves on nursing and hospital committees when requested and shares relevant information with committees as needed.
- Educates patients, families, and professionals through educational materials, in-services, lectures, and publications.
- Participates in the quality assessment/improvement program for the service.
- Identifies follow-up quality improvement projects or research studies based on quality data.
- Uses quality improvement data and research findings to enhance patient care.
REQUIRED
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
NP-focused Master’s of Nursing Program; no prior experience required.
PREFERRED
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Prior experience in similar clinical setting/specialty preferred.
- Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with authorization by the Board of Registration in Nursing to practice in an expanded role.
- Active Massachusetts license as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse.
- Licensed as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in Massachusetts.
- Registered with the specialty or other accrediting organization for Nurse Practitioners.
- Registered with the State of Massachusetts and DEA for prescription writing privileges.
- Current BLS Certification.
- National NP Board certification; ACLS Certification dependent on specialty.
- Expert clinical judgment and ability to be self-directive with initiative in an expanded role.
