Registered Professional Nurse (RN) – Yale New Haven Health System
As an integral member of the Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) healthcare team, the RN upholds the YNHHS mission, vision, values, and strategic initiatives to provide the highest level of patient‑centered care. The RN practices professional nursing within the legal and ethical framework established by the Connecticut Nurse Practice Act, the American Nurses Association (ANA) Scope and Standards for Nursing Practice, ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses, and the YNHHS Professional Practice Model.
The professional role of the RN is exemplified by leadership, delegation, collaboration, effective communication, and ensuring quality outcomes.
- Establishes and maintains a therapeutic relationship with patients and families, integrating cultural and diversity considerations into care.
- Communicates and works collaboratively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Respects patients’ values, preferences, expressed needs, and knowledge, and incorporates them into holistic data collection, care planning, and evaluation.
- Applies the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice (2015) by utilizing assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation components.
- Coordinates care delivery and transitions, engages in health teaching and promotion, and evaluates progress toward outcomes.
The RN is guided by the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, which describe the nursing process and the competencies expected of all RNs. The ANA Standards of Professional Performance further define behaviors related to ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence‑based practice and research, quality of practice, resource utilization, and environmental health. The RN is accountable for professional actions to patients, peers, and society.
Qualifications- Graduated from an accredited nursing school.
- Licensed and currently registered nurse in the State of Connecticut.
- Continuously engaged in professional development to maintain competence.
- Ability to lead within the professional practice setting and demonstrate integrity in decision‑making.

Unit Descriptions – HVC Cardiac Care- HVC Cardiac Medical Intermediate Care Unit (5-2 SP) – 26‑bed cardiovascular medicine inpatient unit providing medical and interventional management of coronary artery disease and arrhythmias.
- HVC Cardiac Surgery Intermediate Care and Step‑Down Unit (5-3 SP) – 25‑bed cardiac surgery unit with 3 step‑down beds for post‑operative CABG, valve replacement, and aneurysm repairs.
- HVC Cardiac Intermediate Care and Step‑down Unit (V3E) – 30‑bed unit at Saint Raphael Campus focused on cardiac procedures and advanced heart failure care.
- Advanced Heart Failure and Stroke Unit (V5E) – 29‑bed unit at Saint Raphael Campus treating advanced heart failure, MI, post‑procedural pacemaker/ICD placements, and stroke patients.
- HVC Cardiac Medical Intermediate Care Unit (5-7 EP) – 26‑bed telemetry unit for general cardiology, post‑procedure care, heart failure, and vascular surgery patients.
