Inspector of Wires - Public Property Job Description
SALARY: $73,520 - $90,420;
Bargaining Unit: BAETI
Works under the general direction of the Superintendent of Buildings and in accordance with the applicable provisions of the Massachusetts General Laws and local ordinances; reviews all unusual problems or situations with the Superintendent of Buildings prior to taking any required action.
Supervisory ResponsibilityN/A
Essential Functions- Performs inspection and administrative work in connection with the enforcement and interpretation of applicable codes relating to electrical wiring and systems
- Conducts inspections of wiring for heat, light, power, fire alarms, burglar alarms, telecommunications, computer and cable TV in all private and public buildings in the City
- Conducts inspections in housing units, multiple occupancy dwellings, industrial and commercial structures
- Responds to complaints and takes appropriate measures to correct unsafe or unlawful conditions
- Investigates structure fires for electrical cause and origin
- Provides information and technical assistance to contractors, homeowners, electricians, and other interested parties regarding proper design and installation of electrical work
- Performs similar or related duties as required, or as situation dictates
Qualifications Required at Hire
- Education and Experience:
High school diploma with supplemental training in electrical wiring installations; five years of progressively responsible experience in electrical installation and construction; or an Equivalent Combination of Education and Experience - Massachusetts Journeyman Electrician License
- Valid Massachusetts motor vehicle operator's license
- Thorough knowledge of the Massachusetts Electrical Code
- Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of electrical wiring and utility company requirements for electrical service
- Knowledge of fire alarms and low voltage systems
- Ability to enforce codes fairly and impartially
- Ability to stay informed of code changes
- Ability to plan, organize, and perform inspections
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, the public, and city departments
- Excellent communication skills and public relations skills
