Salary:

  • Level I: up to $53,000.00, based on education and experience
  • Level II: up to $56,000.00, based on education and experience
  • Level III: up to $61,000.00, based on education and experience

Monday to Friday, 8 am – 5 pm

Position Description

The Sooner Start program is Oklahoma’s early intervention program designed to meet the needs of families with infants and toddlers (ages birth to 3 years old) with developmental delays and/or disabilities in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The Child Development Specialists in the Sooner Start program provide individual and family services to increase parenting skills and enhance the developmental potential of young children.

Services are delivered in the child’s natural environment—home, childcare, park, etc.—and include screenings, evaluations, intervention, and parent education.

Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
  • Provide early intervention services in the child and family’s natural environment (home, childcare, park, etc.)
  • Educate parents and professionals in child development through materials and curricula developed for this purpose.
  • Participate in family interviews and conduct intakes, including client interviews and assessments to make appropriate recommendations for services.
  • Collaborate with families and caregivers to identify goals, develop strategies, and effective family intervention service plans.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of the Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) according to state and federal guidelines.
  • Serve as a member of an interdisciplinary team to monitor the effectiveness of child health and development services.
  • Teach parents ways to enhance their child’s developmental potential.
  • Maintain confidential records of services, including progress notes and evaluation reports, in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Assist in the selection, preparation, and distribution of materials on child development.
  • Provide individuals and families with prevention information on parenting and child development topics.
  • Provide referrals to individuals and families for relevant services to assist in achieving goals and enhancing well‑being.
  • Collaborate with other community agencies and plan and conduct community‑wide efforts to promote health, development, and behavioral well‑being of young children and families.
  • Initiate and implement steps necessary for smooth transition services from the early intervention program.
  • Be present at the office as an essential function of the job.
Level III Additional Responsibilities
  • Participate as a member of an interdisciplinary team in completing assessments and developing Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs).
Other Duties
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and support the mission, vision, values, policies, confidentiality standards, and code of ethical behavior.
  • Work effectively in a team environment, participating and assisting peers.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Level I: Master’s degree in child development, early childhood education, early childhood special education, developmental psychology, or family relations/child development; or a master’s in special education with a minimum of 18 graduate‑level hours (300 or above) in specified areas.
  • Level II: Requirements of Level I plus one year of post‑master’s experience in child development, early childhood education, or early childhood special education and eligibility for certification as a Child and Parenting Specialist (CCPS). Certification must be obtained within 12 months if not held at hire.
  • Level III: Requirements of Level II plus three years of post‑master’s experience in child development, early childhood education, or early childhood special education and eligibility for CCPS certification. Certification must be obtained within 12 months if not held at hire.
