Assistant Director of Bands

This position assists in directing and coordinating the school band program to develop students' individual and ensemble performance skills, musicianship, and appreciation of music. Supports the planning, rehearsal, and performance of instrumental ensembles while contributing to the overall success and growth of the district band program.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assist in planning and conducting rehearsals for concert band, marching band, and other instrumental ensembles.
  • Support preparation and presentation of concerts, contests, festivals, and community performances.
  • Reinforce proper instrumental technique, music reading skills, and ensemble performance standards.
  • Assist in selecting appropriate and high-quality band literature representing a variety of musical styles and historical periods.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Bands to organize auditions, placements, and ensemble assignments.
  • Assist with marching band rehearsals, performances, and related activities as required.
  • Support recruitment and retention efforts to maintain strong enrollment and balanced instrumentation within the band program.
  • Assist in organizing travel, uniforms, equipment, music inventory, and event logistics.
  • Maintain accurate student records, music library files, and instrument inventory.
  • Participate in school and district activities and collaborate with other music educators to support continuity of the district band program.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with students, parents, staff, and community members.
  • Attend required meetings, professional development activities, and fine arts department events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or Executive Director of Fine Arts.

  • Ability to handle problematic and/or difficult situations professionally by communicating with the appropriate person.

Attendance Statement:
Able to be in attendance for assigned responsibilities with 95% attendance.

Environmental Conditions:

Primarily indoor classroom and rehearsal settings with occasional outdoor rehearsals and performances. Evening and weekend events required, including performances, competitions, and travel.
