Position Overview:
The Office of Public Counsel, a division of the Nebraska Legislature, is seeking an Assistant Public CounselI to investigate complaints, conduct investigations, and recommend improvements to state agencies. Salary range: $72,053–$81,049 annually.

- Investigate complaints, issues, or inquiries about state government agencies independently or as part of an investigative team.
- Research and analyze laws, rules, and public records.
- Conduct field investigations and personal interviews.
- Analyze government program functions, documents, and activities.
- Identify issues, recommend actions, resolution strategies, and provide solutions.
- Prepare letters, memoranda, standard and special reports regarding complaints.
- Document investigations and inquiries on office forms and records.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Two years of administrative experience with state government (a relevant graduate degree may substitute).
- Knowledge of investigative procedures and techniques.
- Knowledge of the structure and operation of federal, state, and local government and the Legislature.
- Knowledge of state statutes, regulatory provisions, and case law affecting the office’s work.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with senators, legislative staff, stakeholders, and the public.
- Ability to work independently, organize and manage work, and maintain confidentiality.
- Graduate or law degree.
Prolonged periods of remaining in a stationary position and working on a computer. Ability to conduct visits to state facilities and related sites.
