Job Overview

The Municipal Alternate Judge position is located in Broken Arrow Municipal Court at 2304 S 1st Place in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. This position is appointed by the Mayor for a two-year term. The Municipal Alternate Judge is responsible for carrying out judicial duties and independently adjudicating cases in the Broken Arrow Municipal Court.

Responsibilities
  • Adjudicate municipal ordinance violations for adults and juveniles. Such violations include but are not limited to: criminal, traffic, alcohol, code enforcement, and animal offenses;
  • Preside over court sessions and make legal decisions based on presented evidence and testimony;
  • Interpret and apply laws, ordinances, and legal precedents to make fair and impartial judgments;
  • Conduct legal research to stay informed with current laws and precedents relevant to cases;
  • Maintain order and decorum in the courtroom, ensuring fair treatment of all parties involved;
  • Collaborate with Municipal court clerks, City Attorney, City Prosecutor, law enforcement, and other City departments to ensure the court process runs smoothly;
  • Uphold ethical standards and integrity in all judicial activities;
  • Manage court dockets and schedules to efficiently handle cases and ensure timely resolutions;
  • Issue warrants and set bond;
  • Perform other work as needed.
Qualifications

Requires a Juris Doctorate Degree from an ABA accredited law school, possession of a valid Oklahoma license to practice law, and a minimum of four (4) years of experience as a licensed, practicing attorney or judge in the State of Oklahoma.

Physical Requirements

Tasks involve the ability to exert minimal physical effort in sedentary work, typically involving some combination of balancing, feeling, handling, hearing, kneeling, mental acuity, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, talking, visual acuity, walking and which involves some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (up to 10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
