We are seeking an experienced and motivated Shop Team Lead to help lead our service shop and technician team. This position serves as the primary working leader in the shop and is responsible for maintaining an organized, productive, efficient, and high-quality service operation.

The Shop Team Lead monitors workflow, technician productivity, repair quality, inspections, documentation, and communication between technicians, advisors, parts, and management. This position requires someone who can lead by example, develop technicians, identify problems early, and keep vehicles moving efficiently through the shop.

The primary responsibility of this position is overall shop performance and workflow, rather than individual technician production.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities Shop Workflow & Productivity
  • Monitor technician workflow, workload, availability, and productivity throughout the day.
  • Assist management with dispatching work based on technician skill level and availability.
  • Monitor stalled or aging repair orders, including vehicles waiting on parts, authorization, or diagnostics.
  • Identify workflow obstacles and communicate concerns to management before they impact customers or production.
  • Monitor technician actual hours, sold hours, efficiency, and performance.
  • Ensure technicians properly clock in and out through Dealer track.
  • Review carryover work and assist with planning upcoming workload.
  • Help technicians remove obstacles that prevent efficient production.
Quality Control & Inspections
  • Monitor repair quality and promote a "fix it right the first time" culture.
  • Identify and investigate comebacks, repeat repairs, and potential misdiagnoses.
  • Verify required diagnostic procedures and repair documentation are completed.
  • Monitor completion and accuracy of multi-point inspections and digital inspection videos.
  • Ensure safety-related concerns and additional repair opportunities are properly documented and communicated.
  • Ensure Used Car 24-Hour Inspections are completed accurately and on time.
  • Assist technicians with difficult diagnostics and repairs as needed.
Warranty & Documentation
  • Assist technicians with warranty documentation for engines, transmissions, straight-time repairs, and other warranty work.
  • Review repair orders for accurate technician stories and supporting documentation.
  • Identify missing documentation before warranty submission.
  • Help reduce warranty corrections, rejected claims, and documentation errors.
  • Communicate potential warranty concerns to management.
Technician Leadership & Development
  • Train, mentor, and support new and existing technicians.
  • Identify technician training and development opportunities.
  • Encourage proper diagnostic procedures and efficient repair practices.
  • Help technicians become more knowledgeable, productive, and independent.
  • Promote teamwork and communication throughout the service department.
  • Lead by example through professionalism, attitude, workmanship, and accountability.
Shop Organization, Safety & Vehicle Control
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment.
  • Hold technicians accountable for maintaining clean and organized work areas.
  • Monitor shop equipment, SSTs, and specialty tools and report repair or replacement needs.
  • Follow all dealership, OSHA, EPA, and applicable safety requirements.
  • Ensure hazardous materials and waste are handled appropriately.
  • Ensure vehicles are properly secured during and after repairs.
  • Help prevent completed vehicles from unnecessarily occupying technician bays.
Communication
  • Maintain clear communication between technicians, advisors, parts, and management.
  • Proactively communicate repair delays, parts issues, diagnostic concerns, technician concerns, warranty issues, equipment failures, safety concerns, and comebacks.
  • Identify vehicles at risk of missing promised completion times and communicate concerns immediately.
  • Escalate issues that could negatively impact shop productivity or customer satisfaction.
Personal Production

The Shop Team Lead may perform diagnostic and repair work as needed; however, personal production must not interfere with the primary leadership responsibilities of the position.

When the shop requires leadership, dispatch assistance, technician support, quality control, or workflow management, those responsibilities take priority. The Team Lead is expected to remain productive while maintaining awareness of the entire shop…
