The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is seeking a dedicated and hardworking team player to join us in our mission to enhance the quality of life for Nebraskans by building and maintaining a convenient, safe, and innovative statewide transportation system.
Responsibilities- Operate trucks and light equipment to complete highway maintenance work.
- Operate tractors with various attachments including discs, harrows, seeders, 15‑foot mowers, sprayers, and hand mowers to maintain highways and right‑of‑way.
- Operate post drivers for the installation of signs, fences, guardrails, and other hand‑held power and manual tools.
- Maintain trees, shrubs, and lawns; perform tree trimming and brush cutting.
- Carry out building maintenance and cleaning; paint buildings and structures.
- Perform manual labor for concrete and bituminous patching and sealing of cracks in highways and structures.
- Manually provide highway traffic control for construction and maintenance projects according to safety procedures.
- Safely move, drag, lift, load, and unload equipment, materials, supplies, and hazardous materials within weight restrictions; spread and tamp surfacing materials.
- Complete routine and general maintenance and mechanical repair on equipment.
- Repair highway signs.
- Perform snow removal and apply chemicals such as selective and non‑selective herbicides to the highway right‑of‑way.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- At least 18 years of age.
- Valid driver’s license.
- For Senior:
Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes and tanker endorsements issued within 60 days of employment.
- Experience operating heavy equipment or a farming background.
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement.
- Commercial Pesticide applicator’s license.
- Basic computer experience.
- Must be able to be placed on call and respond during non‑scheduled work hours, including holidays and weekends, for emergencies and special events.
- Must be able to report to work for snow and other highway emergencies within 40 minutes under normal driving conditions.
- Regular and reliable attendance is required.
- Safe handling of equipment and materials.
- Ability to move, drag, and lift 35 pounds frequently, up to 60 pounds occasionally, and 90 pounds infrequently (with assistance).
- Ability to work outdoors in extreme temperatures and around high‑speed traffic.
- Ability to read, communicate, follow instructions, and use minimal supervision.
- Basic computer and arithmetic skills.
