Overview

The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is seeking a dedicated and hardworking team player to join us in our mission to enhance the quality of life for Nebraskans by building and maintaining a convenient, safe, and innovative statewide transportation system.

Responsibilities
  • Operate trucks and light equipment to complete highway maintenance work.
  • Operate tractors with various attachments including discs, harrows, seeders, 15‑foot mowers, sprayers, and hand mowers to maintain highways and right‑of‑way.
  • Operate post drivers for the installation of signs, fences, guardrails, and other hand‑held power and manual tools.
  • Maintain trees, shrubs, and lawns; perform tree trimming and brush cutting.
  • Carry out building maintenance and cleaning; paint buildings and structures.
  • Perform manual labor for concrete and bituminous patching and sealing of cracks in highways and structures.
  • Manually provide highway traffic control for construction and maintenance projects according to safety procedures.
  • Safely move, drag, lift, load, and unload equipment, materials, supplies, and hazardous materials within weight restrictions; spread and tamp surfacing materials.
  • Complete routine and general maintenance and mechanical repair on equipment.
  • Repair highway signs.
  • Perform snow removal and apply chemicals such as selective and non‑selective herbicides to the highway right‑of‑way.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • For Senior:
    Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes and tanker endorsements issued within 60 days of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience operating heavy equipment or a farming background.
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement.
  • Commercial Pesticide applicator’s license.
  • Basic computer experience.
Additional Requirements
  • Must be able to be placed on call and respond during non‑scheduled work hours, including holidays and weekends, for emergencies and special events.
  • Must be able to report to work for snow and other highway emergencies within 40 minutes under normal driving conditions.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Safe handling of equipment and materials.
  • Ability to move, drag, and lift 35 pounds frequently, up to 60 pounds occasionally, and 90 pounds infrequently (with assistance).
  • Ability to work outdoors in extreme temperatures and around high‑speed traffic.
  • Ability to read, communicate, follow instructions, and use minimal supervision.
  • Basic computer and arithmetic skills.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and processes.
  • Quality/results‑oriented performance and sense of urgency.
  • Demonstrate safe and reliable practices and behaviors.
  • Positive interpersonal skills and conflict resolution.
