School Bus Aide

Bus Aide

Assist with the loading/unloading of special needs students. Responsible for the safe transport of the students to school. May assist with student emergency health needs.

Loads and unloads special needs children to and from the school bus as per district procedures and provides for their basic needs. Provides a safe and controlled atmosphere on the bus by ensuring that all riders are properly seat belted and that riders do not create problems for each other. Promotes fair and reasonable disciplinary practices in order to protect riders.

Provides socialization and emotional support by displaying positive expectations, kindness and understanding of each student's needs. Abides by district safety standards and procedures. Follow proper wheelchair securement and ensure students are safely restrained before bus moves. Performs duties and responsibilities as requested by the Transportation Director or designee.

Ability to use sound judgment in any situation. Ability to deal successfully and rapidly with changes in assignments and properly respond to applicable correspondence/communication received. Ability to project a professional company image through in-person, phone, and electronic interaction. Ability to build and foster harmonious rapport and work cooperatively with District staff and the public while achieving the objectives and goals of the position.

Ability to handle problematic and/or difficult situations professionally by communicating with the appropriate person. Able to be in attendance for assigned responsibilities with 95% attendance. Exposure to extremes of heat and cold. Possible exposure to bodily fluids.

Ability to manipulate objects of up to 50 lbs for 20 feet is required. Walking as required to access equipment and perform responsibilities. Sitting for length of assigned route. Use of hands and arms to assist with wheelchairs, setting brakes, foot pedals, etc. Climbing and descending bus steps. Stooping, kneeling, and crouching as required for student care. Talking and hearing as to communicate concerning job-related duties as assigned.

Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less) with or without correction. Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more) with or without correction. Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors). Peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
