Job Description 3 Month Contract With A Local Authority

Job Purpose

The HGV Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, inspecting, repairing and servicing the Council's fleet of heavy goods vehicles, light commercial vehicles and specialist plant to ensure they remain safe, compliant and operational. Working across the Council's depots, the postholder plays a vital role in supporting frontline services by ensuring vehicles meet DVSA, Operator Licence and MOT requirements while delivering high standards of workmanship and customer service.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out planned maintenance, inspections, servicing and repairs on HGVs, light commercial vehicles, specialist vehicles and plant equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic faults efficiently and accurately.
  • Prepare vehicles for MOT inspections and ensure all work complies with DVSA, Operator Licence and Council standards.
  • Complete chassis, bodywork and specialist vehicle repairs, including welding where required.
  • Respond to vehicle breakdowns and carry out repairs both on-site and at Council depots.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection reports and workshop documentation using fleet management systems.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to deliver an effective vehicle maintenance programme and meet operational deadlines.
  • Ensure vehicles are returned to service safely, efficiently and fit for operational use.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping within the workshop and contribute to continuous service improvement.
  • Comply with all health and safety legislation, risk assessments and safe working practices.
  • Participate in alternating early and late shift rotas and work across both Council depots as required.
Requirements
  • City & Guilds Level 3 qualification in Heavy Motor Vehicle Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Qualified to VOSA/DVSA standards for HGV inspections and testing.
  • Qualified MOT Nominated Tester (Class 4, 5 and
    7).
  • Full LGV Class 2 (Category

    C) driving licence.
  • Experience maintaining, inspecting and repairing HGVs, light commercial vehicles, specialist vehicles and plant equipment.
  • Experience diagnosing and repairing hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Experience carrying out MIG, gas and electric welding.
  • Good understanding of DVSA regulations, Operator Licence requirements and health and safety legislation.
  • Ability to work independently and manage workloads to meet deadlines.
  • Good communication skills and a commitment to delivering high-quality customer service.
  • Coded welding qualification.
  • Experience maintaining refuse collection vehicles (RCVs), sweepers, waste tankers or similar specialist fleet vehicles.
  • Experience using fleet management or workshop management IT systems.
Additional Information
  • Location: Primarily Bromsgrove Depot, with travel to Redditch Depot as required.
