Essential Functions

Reporting to the Instructional Leader, teachers at Haven Charter High School (HCHS) are responsible for designing and delivering rigorous, student-centered instruction that meets the diverse needs of all learners. Teachers create an engaging learning environment that supports academic growth, critical thinking, and student achievement.

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Build strong, supportive relationships with adolescents
  • Maintain effective classroom management while delivering high-quality instruction
  • Plan and implement differentiated lessons that address diverse student strengths and needs
  • Integrate technology intentionally to enhance engagement, collaboration, and learning outcomes
  • Create an organized, inclusive, and culturally responsive classroom environment
  • Select and utilize a variety of instructional materials and resources to support learning
  • Assess student progress regularly and provide timely, actionable feedback
  • Use assessment data to inform instruction, differentiate learning, and monitor progress
  • Maintain accurate and compliant student records in accordance with applicable laws and policies
  • Support student behavior through restorative practices and consistent implementation of school policies
  • Engage in ongoing self-reflection to improve instructional practice
  • Collaborate with colleagues across content areas to design interdisciplinary units and projects
  • Design interdisciplinary, project-based learning experiences aligned to health sciences pathways or core humanities classes
  • Participate in professional development aligned with school priorities and instructional best practices
  • Attend and contribute to department, school, and family meetings
  • Communicate regularly with students, families, and colleagues regarding student progress and needs
  • Contribute to the broader school community, including extracurricular activities, student programs, and school-wide initiatives
  • Participate in diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism professional learning opportunities

Qualifications

Will be fingerprinted prior to employment by the New York City Department of Health and/or by the New York City Department of Education.

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Workdays/hours subject to change based on HCHS needs.

Qualifications
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Facility with and willingness to learn education technologies
  • Experience working with adolescents in grades 9-12, with two years of teaching experience preferred
  • Bachelor's degree with teaching experience;
    Master's degree preferred
  • NYS 7-12 certified or in process preferred
