JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary/Objective

East Side House (ESH) is a community resource serving the Bronx and Northern Manhattan. We believe education is the key that enables individuals to create economic and civic opportunities for themselves, their families, and their communities. ESH's COMPASS Elementary School-Year Program aligns with this mission by providing high-quality educational, recreational, and youth-development programming through community-center and school-based partnerships.

Funded by the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), the COMPASS Elementary Program provides a safe, structured, and engaging after-school environment that supports the academic, social, emotional, creative, and physical development of students in grades K–5.

We are seeking enthusiastic, dependable, creative, and youth-centered educators who can develop and facilitate engaging activities across multiple enrichment areas, including STEM, visual arts, literacy and storytelling, social-emotional learning, wellness, mindfulness, movement, and sensory-based activities. Ideal candidates will be committed to creating an inclusive learning environment and adapting activities to support students with different abilities, developmental levels, learning styles, and sensory needs.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

1. Ensure the safety, active supervision, well-being, and engagement of participants during all program activities.

2. Develop and facilitate structured, age-appropriate lesson plans in STEM, visual arts, literacy, SEL, wellness, mindfulness, movement, and/or sensory-based enrichment.

3. Establish clear learning objectives and prepare students for culminating projects, presentations, exhibitions, or showcases.

4. Adapt activities and instructional approaches for different abilities, learning styles, developmental levels, and sensory needs.

5. Maintain effective group management and clear behavior expectations while creating a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment.

6. Promote positive youth development through mentorship, encouragement, teamwork, and relationship-building.

7. Collaborate with Activity Specialists, program leadership, support staff, and families to address student participation, behavior, and individual support needs.

8. Support daily program operations, including arrival, meals, transitions, dismissal, field trips, family events, and special activities.

9. Maintain clean and organized classrooms and properly manage program materials, equipment, and supplies.

10. Complete required documentation accurately and on time, including attendance, lesson plans, activity reports, incident reports, and behavior documentation.

11. Immediately report injuries, incidents, safety concerns, behavioral concerns, and significant student needs to program leadership.

12. Participate in required staff meetings, trainings, professional-development sessions, and agency events.

13. Demonstrate professionalism, punctuality, reliability, flexibility, teamwork, and openness to feedback.

14. Follow all East Side House, DYCD, DOE, Department of Health, and program policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
