Unit Overview:
26-bed Adult Psychiatric Unit caring for patients 18+ with diagnoses including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, MDD, substance abuse, and drug-induced psychosis. Rare detox patients.

Typical Staffing:

• Days: 4 RNs & 4 PCTs

• Nights: 3 RNs & 3 PCTs
  Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:6–7

This is a high-acuity behavioral health environment requiring strong de-escalation skills, professionalism, and the ability to maintain therapeutic boundaries.

Responsibilities:

• Provide direct nursing care to adult psychiatric patients

• Perform assessments and administer medications

• Support crisis intervention and de-escalation efforts

• Maintain patient and staff safety at all times

• Collaborate with interdisciplinary behavioral health team

• Document accurately in Allscripts

• Participate in required floating to adolescent and adult psych units as needed

Requirements:

• Active NY RN License

• Minimum 1 year of psychiatric RN experience (Required)

• No first-time travelers

• BLS (AHA)

• ACLS

• PALS

• De-escalation certification required prior to start (CPI, MOAB, Handle with Care, TRUST, or PMCS)

• Flu vaccine may be required per facility policy

Important Facility Guidelines:

• Travelers are first to float (Adolescent Psych, Adult Psych, LRC, CPEP, Detox)

• Every other weekend required

Unit Notes:

• Physical restraints utilized as needed (education provided in orientation)

• Security present in Psych ER; routine rounding on unit

• Strong team collaboration expected

This is a structured, fast-paced psychiatric setting requiring resilience, flexibility, and strong clinical judgment.
