THE OPPORTUNITY
The Bronx Community Justice Center, a program of the Center for Justice Innovation, works to create a safer, more equitable Bronx through community-driven safety initiatives, violence prevention, youth opportunity, and economic development efforts. Save Our Streets South Bronx is a replication of the Chicago Project for Violence Prevention's evidence-based Cure Violence program, a cutting-edge gun violence prevention model that aims to reduce and prevent shootings through the use of public health strategies.
The Bronx Community Justice Center is seeking a Program Manager, Community Safety. Reporting to the Associate Director of Community Safety, the Program Manager will manage day-to-day operations of the Save Our Streets South Bronx program and support additional violence prevention efforts and new initiatives.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Manage day-to-day operations of the Save Our Streets Bronx gun violence prevention program including supervision of a team of Outreach Workers and Violence Interrupters;
- Build community support for the program (including faith-based community leaders, residents, businesses, and community organizations that provide services needed by program participants);
- Coordinate, lead, and support regular mobilization and public education activities and organize a minimum of one anti-violence community event in the service area per month that brings residents together and discourages the acceptance of violence as a normal part of life;
- Take a lead role in organizing community responses for all shooting incident and violent incidents (where applicable) that occur in the service area within 72 hours of receipt of notice of the incident;
- Assure systematic recordkeeping on program performance indicators, participant caseload and program highlights;
- Maintain data integrity and accuracy, submitting timely and complete monthly program reports via prescribed tool/mechanism;
- Create internal protocols for reporting staff and participant incidents;
- Manage a team of 26 front-line staff including Outreach Workers, Violence Interrupters, and Hospital Responders including direct supervision of 4 supervisors;
- Manager the hiring process for all SOS staff;
- Document supervision and next steps;
- Attend monthly program manager meetings, monthly calls, and any ad hoc meetings and required trainings;
- Attend community-based meetings in primary service area;
- Serves as a representative of the organization and program, as needed; and
- Additional relevant tasks, as needed.
Knowledge of violence prevention, community engagement and organizing, and youth engagement and support strategies. The candidate should reside in or have an in-depth knowledge of Morrisania or Mott Haven. Experience working with at-risk youth and gang members, and knowledge of the street sets, crews, gangs, and or groups is a must. Candidate must be able to walk 30 blocks or more on a regular basis, and work a flexible schedule that includes late evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Must be willing to work in inclement weather. Excellent communication skills, commitment to working towards positive community change, and interest in learning new skills and information are a must for this position.
Position Location: South Bronx.
Position Type: Full-time, evenings and weekends. Schedule may be flexible, changing, and include late nights.
Compensation: The compensation range for this position is $66,500 - $77,000 and is commensurate with experience.
