Peer Supervisor, Bronx HOPE

Operating through Bronx Community Solutions (BCS), Bronx HOPE (Heroin Overdose Prevention Education) is a pre-arraignment diversion program being implemented in collaboration with the Bronx District Attorney's Office, New York Police Department, Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice, and several community-based health providers. The program provides meaningful engagement between arrest and arraignment to individuals in the Bronx issued a Desk Appearance Ticket (DAT) for possession of a controlled substance.

This is an innovative, new effort to be smarter about policing and prosecuting addiction by responding to low-level possessions of controlled substances –especially opioids – with harm-reduction alternatives to conventional court proceedings that rely on jail or the threat of jail as the corrective measure.

Bronx Community Solutions is seeking a Peer Supervisor, Bronx HOPE to provide supervision to the daily dispatch operations of the HOPE Program and to the team of Peer Specialists. The Peer Supervisor will assist with training, scheduling and dispatch operations to police precincts within established time frames. Additionally, the Supervisor will manage all assessed individuals who are arrested for the possession and/or use of controlled substance and link them with appropriate services such as recovery support, harm reduction services, mental health care, crisis intervention, and more.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Manage client's cases using Salesforce to track services, document case notes, monitor outcomes, and maintain accurate client's records in a fast-paced environment;
  • Utilize Salesforce to coordinate client intake, referrals, follow ups, and reporting while ensuring timely and accurate documentation;
  • Conduct outreach and engagement for District Attorney referral cases, perform client assessments, and deliver prevention recovery services through in-person, telephone, and virtual support;
  • Collaborate closely with NYPD and the Peer Specialists staff to ensure response to precinct-level arrests are met at the appropriate time;
  • Provide dispatch coverage, including response to NYPD dispatch calls and engagement with potential HOPE participants at the precinct;
  • Help facilitate program referrals and assessments and manage the HOPE databases;
  • Facilitate educational workshops in the community to spread overdose prevention education and facilitate ATI groups;
  • Supervise and collaborate on the development of an initial action plan, including a thorough review of substance use-related issues;
  • Participate in hiring and staff development, in collaboration with the HOPE Program Manager. Provide orientation and job training for HOPE Peer Specialists;
  • Develop Peer Specialist work schedules and determine leave or vacancy coverage plans, in collaboration with the Program Manager;
  • Provide constructive feedback to Peer Specialists based on direct observation of service delivery and review of service documentation for continuous quality improvement;
  • Offer on-call supervisory coverage on a rotating basis and provide support to staff to address emergent or urgent issues they encounter in the field; and;
  • Additional relevant tasks, as needed.

Qualifications:

The candidate should have a bachelor's degree and 2 years of relevant experience; or have an associate's degree and 2 years of relevant experience in advocacy, outreach and engagement, self-help, or recovery and 1 year of supervisory experience. Individuals with lived experience welcomed. Experience with integrated substance abuse assessment and treatment, motivational interviewing techniques, and stage-wise treatment required. CRPA (Certified Recovery Peer Advocate) preferred.

Candidate will have knowledge of the principles and practices of harm reduction and the ability to communicate accurately, empathically and under time constraints. Experience using Salesforce, Microsoft Office programs, particularly Microsoft Word and Microsoft Outlook preferred. Must be available to work a flexible schedule as this position follows non-standard working hours including some Saturday and evening hours as needed in response to clients…
