HX5 is an award-winning provider of engineering, research and development, and technical services to clients such as NASA and the Department of Defense. Founded in 2004, HX5 is a fast-growing veteran‑ and woman‑owned company with locations nationwide.

HX5 is currently seeking a senior‑level Orion Main Engine (OME) Assembly Engineer to join our team in Brook Park, Ohio in support of the GEARS contract at NASA Glenn Research Center.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The ideal candidate will possess deep knowledge of OME requirements, planned test campaigns, and the associated verification activities necessary to ensure the engine meets both NASA and European Space Agency requirements. Familiarity with OMS‑E performance is also desirable to support production and post‑flight analysis activities. Job responsibilities include:

  • Establishing an approach for verification of the OME technical requirements. This includes supporting the revisions of the OME Project Technical Requirements Document (PTRS) authored by NASA and the OME‑to‑ESM (European Service Module) Interface Control Document (ICD) authored by Airbus.
  • Working with Aerojet‑Rocketdyne (AR) to confirm that the verification approach to each technical requirement is acceptable to NASA and Airbus.
  • Reviewing and revising draft verification closure reports (VCRs) by AR as necessary to ensure they conform to NASA’s and Airbus’s expectations.
  • Reviewing acceptance test reports provided by AR on components, subassemblies, and full assemblies for the Engineering Development Unit (EDU) and Qualification engines.
  • Supporting technical readiness reviews, data reviews, and test reports for the vibration testing and hot‑fire testing of the EDU and Qualification engines at sea level and altitude facilities.
  • Performing post‑flight data analyses of the Artemis‑II mission for OMS‑E performance, specifically looking for any anomalous operation of instrumented engine data returned that indicates operation outside of its qualified environment.
  • Supporting production, deliveries, and flight readiness of OMS‑E for ESM‑3 to ESM‑6, including waiver development and support for hardware not meeting requirements.
  • Documenting, reporting, and presenting results clearly and concisely.
Required Skills
  • An extensive background and experience in the Space Shuttle OMS‑E (Orbital Maneuvering System Engine) and the qualification, testing, and integration of that OMS‑E into the ESM.
  • An extensive background in the new OME, specifically with the requirements and planned testing of that engine, along with the verifications required to ensure that the OME will meet NASA and the European Space Agency’s need.
  • Extensive knowledge of past testing and flight data of the OMS‑E performed for the shuttle and Orion use, with the ability to assess Artemis mission flight data returned on the ESM‑MEA for any anomalous behavior.
Other Desired Skills
  • Skills in mentoring and transferring knowledge and experience to early‑ and mid‑career engineers.
  • Excellent technical writing, editing, and presentation skills.
Education/Experience
  • Mechanical/Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering degree or equivalent with the following experience level:
    • Bachelor's degree and 20 years of experience
    • Master’s degree and 15 years of experience
