HX5 is an award-winning provider of engineering, research and development, and technical services to clients such as NASA and the Department of Defense. Founded in 2004, HX5 is a fast-growing veteran- and woman-owned company with locations nationwide.
HX5 is currently seeking an individual for its Electrical Engineering department to provide motor drive engineering support to NASA’s Glenn Research Center (GRC) Transformational Tools and Technologies' Alternative Propulsion Focus Area which develops next-generation hybrid propulsion technologies by innovating solutions for key next-generation hybrid electric propulsion sub-systems. The development strategy includes rapidly conducting analyses, designs, assemblies, integrations, ground test and flight test cycles to evaluate the potential of novel solutions.
A key goal of this work is to create a rapid, novel system design methodology for next-generation hybrid propulsion through identifying and evaluating open‑source software packages and artificial intelligence packages that have the potential to accelerate design cycles from idea to hardware flight implementation.
- Must have hands‑on experience designing and testing motor drives.
- Ability to empirically measure the static mechanical output torque under various rotor/stator alignments and systematically compare these results against the motor's theoretical torque predictions.
- Ability to instrument the test setup to capture, measure, and record the corresponding electrical parameters of the drive, such as phase currents, voltages, and angle sensor outputs.
- Ability to use ECAD tools (KiCAD) for circuit design and PCB layout.
- Strong problem‑solving, troubleshooting, and systematic testing skills required to safely conduct experimental demonstrations on motor drive test beds.
- Understand use of AI tools to add in the generation of technical designs.
- Familiar with DC power buses, synchronous reluctance motors, and bi‑directional motor drives.
- Understanding of fault tolerant architectures.
- Must have one of the following combinations of education and experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with 2 to 5 years of experience.
- Master’s degree with 0 to 2 years of experience.
