MEP Project Manager / Mechanical Commissioning & Turnover Engineer
This role leads mechanical commissioning and turnover activities for complex MEP projects, with a strong focus on safety, quality, and on-time delivery. You will manage multiple projects across healthcare, manufacturing, semiconductor, and commercial facilities, ensuring proper installation, startup, inspection, and documentation of mechanical and MEP systems from pre-construction through project closeout.
Responsibilities
- Oversee mechanical commissioning and turnover activities for multiple MEP projects, ensuring all systems are installed, tested, and documented in accordance with project requirements.
- Apply a strong understanding of safety practices and proper installation methods to all field activities, inspections, and project coordination.
- Review equipment orders, submittals, and RFIs to confirm technical accuracy, compliance with specifications, and alignment with project scope.
- Coordinate system startups with vendors, subcontractors, and owners, ensuring smooth integration of mechanical and controls systems.
- Review shutdown requests and assist in planning and coordinating shutdowns with owners to minimize operational disruption.
- Understand project requirements, milestones, and deadlines, and actively assist the project team in meeting schedule and performance obligations.
- Use project management and construction software tools such as Procore, Microsoft Project, Bluebeam, AutoCAD, Sage, and MS Office to manage documentation, schedules, and communication.
- Interpret and work from GNP and P& to verify system design, installation, and commissioning requirements.
- Prepare and maintain clear, accurate daily inspection reports focused on mechanical installations and system performance.
- Manage and review as-built drawings and MEP turnover packages to ensure completeness, accuracy, and readiness for client handover.
- Conduct regular mechanical inspections to verify proper installation, code compliance, and adherence to safety standards.
- Collaborate with controls vendors and subcontractors to understand and verify the controls package, including system integration and functionality.
- Maintain an understanding of infrastructure and process systems, and apply this knowledge to commissioning and turnover activities.
- Support pre-construction efforts, including review of design documents, identification of constructability issues, and planning for commissioning and turnover.
- Assist in managing change orders related to mechanical and MEP scopes, including documentation, pricing, and coordination with project stakeholders.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with owners, vendors, subcontractors, and internal teams using strong verbal and computer skills.
- Participate in and contribute to training and development initiatives, sharing best practices and supporting continuous improvement within the project team.
Essential Skills
- Proven project management and construction management experience in MEP or mechanical-focused projects.
- Hands-on experience with mechanical commissioning, inspections, installation oversight, and turnover documentation.
- Strong understanding of safety practices and proper installation methods for mechanical and MEP systems.
- Experience reviewing equipment orders, submittals, and RFIs for technical accuracy and compliance.
- Proficiency with Procore for project management and documentation.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Project for scheduling and timeline management.
- Proficiency with Bluebeam for drawing review, markups, and document control.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD for reviewing and understanding mechanical and MEP drawings.
- Ability to read and interpret GNP and P& for mechanical and process systems.
- Excellent verbal communication skills and strong computer literacy for reporting and documentation.
- Experience with inspections, installation oversight, and controls systems within construction environments.
- Knowledge of pre-construction processes and change order management.
- 30-hour OSHA certification, demonstrating commitment to safety standards.
- Experience working on healthcare, manufacturing, clean room, or biopharma projects.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with Sage or similar construction management and accounting software.
- Proficiency with MS Office tools, including Word, Excel, and Outlook, for reporting and communication.
- Background in projects within healthcare, manufacturing, semiconductor, site development, and general contractor environments.
- Mechanical experience and familiarity with process piping systems, which is beneficial but not strictly required.
- Experience in commissioning activities across diverse facility types such as corporate offices, retail, and financial institutions.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining quality and schedule commitments.
