The Mortgage Lending Officer is a member-focused mortgage professional responsible for assisting members and prospective borrowers who initiate contact with the Credit Union regarding residential mortgage financing. This position serves as a primary point of contact throughout the mortgage process, from initial inquiry through closing, while providing knowledgeable, timely, and personalized guidance.
The Mortgage Lending Specialist evaluates members' financial needs, discusses available mortgage products and financing options, gathers and reviews required documentation, and ensures applications are structured and processed in accordance with established lending guidelines and regulatory requirements.
This is an inbound-focused position. Success in this role is driven by responsiveness to member inquiries, effective management of assigned mortgage opportunities, consultative conversations, timely follow-up, and the ability to convert inbound member needs into completed mortgage relationships. The position's main focus is not cold calling or prospecting, however during slower times, some prospecting may be required. The Mortgage Lending Officer works closely with Mortgage Processors, Credit Analysts, Lending Support Specialists, Underwriting, Closing, and other internal and external partners to provide an efficient, accurate, and exceptional member experience.
Responsibilities:- Respond promptly and professionally to inbound mortgage inquiries received by phone, email, online banking, digital channels, referrals from Credit Union employees, and other approved internal sources.
- Conduct thorough interviews with members and prospective borrowers to understand their home financing needs, financial circumstances, goals, and preferred timing.
- Educate members on available mortgage products, terms, rates, requirements, repayment options, and associated costs to help them understand their financing alternatives.
- Recommend appropriate mortgage solutions based on the member's stated needs, financial profile, loan purpose, and applicable Credit Union lending programs.
- Discuss mortgage and other applicable lending products, including non-home-equity products, and identify appropriate opportunities to refer members to other Credit Union departments or products.
- Initiate and manage the mortgage application process from initial inquiry through closing.
- Obtain, review, and analyze borrower information and documentation to determine eligibility and ensure applications are complete and accurately presented.
- Underwrite and approve mortgage applications within established individual lending authority and Credit Union lending guidelines.
- Underwrite mortgage applications to ensure borrowers meet applicable program requirements and that credit decisions are consistent with established risk parameters.
- Review, underwrite, recommend, approve, or decline loan requests within established individual lending authority and make recommendations to management for requests outside individual approval limits or established program guidelines.
- Coordinate mortgage loans involving higher levels of complexity, value, or risk and work with appropriate internal partners to ensure timely resolution of issues.
