Overview
Under general supervision of the Chief Nursing Officer, Associate Chief Nursing Officer, Nurse Manager, and direct supervision of RN 1, charge nurse, RN or LPN, the certified nurse technician or nurse technician performs direct patient care for an assigned number of patients. Patient assignments will be determined by adjustments to the department's patient census and current staffing levels for overall patient care, which are reviewed shift-to-shift.
The CNA/Tech may be assigned up to 40 hours per week and may rotate between day and night shifts according to unit and staff needs. The CNA/Tech functions within the scope of practice and approved policies, procedures, and regulations for the department and organization. The CNA/Tech should cope with frequent unpleasant sights/smells and difficult patient/family scenarios.
- Assist the Charge Nurse, RN or LPN with orientation and preceptorship for Nurse Techs, Certified Nurse Assistants, students, or Unit Secretaries assigned to the unit.
- Work and relate professionally with peers, physicians, mid-level providers, administration, patients, and visitors.
- Collect selected patient information and perform patient care as directed by RN/LPN; document care given and assist with chart review and maintenance per policy.
- Enter patient data, orders, or charges into the computer system accurately and timely.
- Monitor and reassess patients' vital signs and perform Accuchecks as directed by RN/LPN.
- Identify patient needs/concerns to RN/LPN or provider for patient safety and satisfaction.
- Maintain clinical competence to perform duties within CNA/Tech competencies and provide care during procedures.
- Promote unit and organizational goals; participate in the development of unit goals.
- Support staffing/scheduling policies to meet unit needs and assist with the establishment of departmental policies and procedures reflecting telemetry services.
- Participate in organizational committees as assigned and provide information on trends related to patient outcomes to Nurse Manager, Charge Nurse, or RN/LPN.
- Maintain knowledge of regulatory requirements (EMTALA, DNV, CMS) and demonstrate professionalism and professional behavior of staff members.
- Demonstrate knowledge related to patient throughput and customer service/satisfaction; monitor census with emphasis on patient throughput and address patient concerns.
- Complete mandatory in-service (YMT) requirements; arrange, attend sessions, and remain current on Healthstream assignments.
- Float to designated areas as assigned by RN 1, Manager or RN.
- Provide direct patient care in accordance with CNA/Tech scope of practice and department policies.
- Perform hourly rounds and assist with activities of daily living (ADLs); ensure patients are bathed, fed, clothed, and comfortable as assigned.
- Assist with positioning, turning, and mobility; manage meal setup, linen changes, and help with discharge planning when applicable.
- Communicate patient needs to other disciplines and support discharge planning efforts.
- Document care provided, including baths, assistance needed, refusals with reason, and intake/output data; perform purposeful rounding (3
Ps: Pain, Positioning, Periphery/Possession) every two hours. - Instruct patients to call for assistance and maintain a patient-centered care approach; introduce yourself and explain planned care to patients.
Teamwork is essential. The CNA/Tech role includes patient advocacy and delivering patient-centered care.
