Forest Engineer

The Forest Engineer (PE) is responsible for the design, permitting, and implementation of forest road systems supporting timber operations throughout Southwest Oregon. This role combines field-based engineering, road design, surveying, permitting, and construction support within a dynamic private timber environment. The successful candidate will operate with significant autonomy while partnering closely with forestry, operations, and contractor teams to deliver safe, compliant, and cost-effective infrastructure projects.

• Design and deliver permanent and temporary forest road systems supporting timber operations in mountainous terrain
• Develop road alignments, grading plans, drainage systems, culvert designs, erosion control measures, and construction packages
• Conduct field reconnaissance, topographic assessments, route selection, and construction staking activities
• Support harvest unit planning, identification, and boundary layout (including RMA establishment and related forestry planning activities) through field and office reconnaissance
• Perform cost analyses and evaluate logging, road construction, surfacing, and access alternatives to support project planning and decision-making
• Develop GIS mapping products, road design packets, and associated project documentation for forestry and engineering operations
• Prepare, review, and stamp engineering plans and design packages as a Professional Engineer, as appropriate
• Coordinate permitting activities and ensure compliance with environmental regulations and the Oregon Forest Practices Act
• Oversee road construction, maintenance, and surfacing projects through contractor and vendor coordination
• Collaborate with forestry and operations teams to support harvest access planning and infrastructure development
• Manage project budgets, schedules, and cost tracking related to road construction and maintenance projects
• Work across seasonal field and office cycles, including design, permitting, construction oversight, and project administration
• Promote a strong safety culture in all field and engineering activities and adhere to company & regulatory standards
• Support broader forestry operations as needed, including wildfire response readiness and field access requirements

• Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required
• Bachelor's degree in Forest Engineering, Civil Engineering, Forest Operations, or related discipline
• 3+ years engineering experience involving road design, construction, drainage, grading, or transportation infrastructure in challenging terrain
• Experience designing and implementing engineering projects with significant field involvement
• Working knowledge of road construction practices, earthwork, drainage systems, and slope stability considerations
• Ability to work independently in remote field environments and make sound engineering decisions
• Comfortable traversing steep terrain and working outdoors in varying weather conditions
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel throughout operating areas
• Must reside in or be willing to relocate to the Brookings, Oregon area

• Direct experience designing forest road systems or transportation infrastructure in timber, logging, or heavy civil environments
• Pacific Northwest forestry or mountainous terrain experience
• Working knowledge of the Oregon Forest Practices Act and related environmental permitting requirements
• Proficiency with engineering and geospatial tools such as GIS, AutoCAD, Road Eng, or similar design platforms
• Surveying, construction staking, and permitting experience
• Logging systems and harvest planning exposure
• NWCG FFT2 certification (or ability to obtain post-hire)
• This role combines office-based engineering work with extensive fieldwork in active timber operations throughout Southwest Oregon
• Fieldwork is performed in remote locations and requires traversing steep, rugged terrain in varying weather conditions
• Work may occur near heavy equipment and active logging operations, including excavators, yarders, bulldozers, helicopters, and log trucks
• The position requires the ability to work outdoors for extended periods in variable weather, including exposure to dust, noise, and other conditions common to forestry operations
• Candidates must be able to safely perform physical activities such as walking uneven terrain, crouching, climbing, and lifting up to 50 pounds while conducting field inspections
• Occasional extended hours may be required to support seasonal operations, construction activities, and project deadlines
• $130-150k base salary target
