Position Summary
The Forestry Technician supports the management and stewardship of company-owned timberlands through a variety of field and office-based forestry tasks. This position involves assisting with timber cruising, road maintenance, reforestation, inventory, GIS data collection, and contract oversight. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and comfortable working independently in outdoor conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist foresters with timber cruising, marking, and layout for harvest and thinning operations.
- Collect and record forest inventory data, including tree measurements, species composition, and stand conditions.
- Support reforestation and silvicultural activities, including site preparation, tree planting, survival checks, and vegetation control.
- Participate in road system maintenance and inspection, flagging, and mapping for access projects.
- Utilize GIS and GPS technologies for data collection, boundary mapping, and record maintenance.
- Monitor logging, road construction, and reforestation contractors for compliance with company standards and environmental regulations.
- Assist with wildfire prevention and hazard mitigation efforts, as needed.
- Maintain and calibrate forestry tools, vehicles, and equipment.
- Ensure all work is conducted in compliance with safety policies and environmental best practices.
Required Qualifications
- Associate degree or higher in Forestry, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, or related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- 1–3 years of relevant forestry or natural resource field experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of forest measurements, silviculture, and timber harvest operations.
- Proficiency with GPS, GIS, and Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to read and interpret maps, aerial photos, and harvest plans.
- Physically capable of performing strenuous outdoor work in varying terrain and weather conditions.
- Valid driver’s license and insurable driving record.
- Familiarity with Oregon Forest Practices Act compliance and reforestation standards.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work effectively with contractors, landowners, and regulatory agencies.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work both independently and as part of a small team.
