Maintenance (Bus Mechanic)
Purpose: The incumbent inspects, services and repairs machinery used to maintain vehicles to a level in which they present no problem or disruptions to the transportation program. The incumbent establishes and conducts thorough checks and inspections on all equipment, and performs service calls for district ground equipment.
Reports To: Director of Transportation/Maintenance
Essential Job Functions- Conducts oneself in the best interest of students, in accordance with the highest traditions of public education and in support of the District's Mission.
- Performs preventive maintenance inspections, services and mechanical repairs on district-owned or leased vehicles; maintains preventive maintenance schedules.
- Diagnoses more challenging mechanical defects, and completes repairs on all district-owned and leased vehicles using diagnostic and test equipment.
- Disassembles, evaluates, repairs/rebuilds and reassembles machines, components, engines, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment and electrical apparatus.
- Reads and interprets technical manuals, schematics or other trade-related instructional materials necessary to make repairs in compliance with technical specifications.
- Adheres to safe work practices and wears and utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment and safety devices.
- Operates vehicles in a safe and responsible manner, including keeping vehicles and equipment and working areas clean and orderly.
- Performs road service as needed.
- Participates in technical training programs and assists in training coworkers and other district employees, as required.
- Prepares and completes parts and repair and material orders, inspection forms and other records, as required.
- Maintains the required tools to repair district-owned and leased vehicles.
- Maintains current knowledge of computer technology as applicable to functional responsibilities.
- Fills in as a substitute bus driver as needed.
Maintains effective working relationships with school personnel, students, and parents. Effectively works and communicates with students, parents, and staff from diverse cultures or backgrounds including those who speak limited or no English.

Required Qualifications- High school diploma or recognized equivalent or vocational school diploma.
- Valid Oregon Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A with passenger endorsement, or possess the ability to obtain a valid Oregon CDL with passenger endorsement within 90 days of employment.
- Three (3) to five (5) years of successful experience as an automotive mechanic that will include, but not be limited to:
- Knowledge of industry accepted preventive maintenance practices.
- Diagnosis and repair of malfunctions in a variety of machines.
- Use of tools, machinery and test equipment applicable to the trade.
- Ability to obtain an Oregon-certified School Bus Inspector Certification within six (6) months of employment.
- Possess tool inventory appropriate to the position's job responsibilities.
- Ability to work a flexible working schedule.
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups, and effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of current computing technologies and software applications appropriate to the position's job responsibilities.
The Maintenance (Bus Mechanic) works outside in all kinds of weather, and often in the dark. Much of the Maintenance (Bus Mechanic)'s time consists of walking, lifting, sitting, crouching, standing and leveraging physical strength as well as machinery.
Potential exposures include, but are not limited to: chemical, diesel, grease and oil fumes, blood-borne pathogens, heavy traffic patterns, cold and hot temperatures, and inclement and severe weather. The job requires a significant amount of time sitting, crouching, and lifting.
