South Dakota State University (SDSU) Continuing and Distance Education is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated individual for the role Director of Extended Studies. This position will provide day-to-day leadership of extended studies education efforts. Specific responsibilities include strategic implementation of initiatives and efforts relating to extended education for credit (courses and programs), professional education and advancement, and education of K-12 students.

The Director of Continuing and Distance Education will work in concert with the Vice Provost for Graduate Education and Extended Studies to lead extended studies personnel, implement strategic initiatives, execute policies and procedures, foster growth, and enhance the quality and effectiveness of extended studies education s position is located in Brookings, South Dakota. This position is a 12-month, full-time, benefits-eligible position.

The Office of Continuing and Distance Education (CDE) is the hub for undergraduate and graduate online and professional education programs, which includes the Coursera, Modern Campus, and other platforms. The Office also manages the University’s High School Dual Enrollment program.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise the CDE team in a manner to ensure effective and efficient operations, and high-quality student/customer services.
  • Responsible for implementation and day-to-day operational management of South Dakota State University’s for-credit and non-credit extended education courses and academic programs.
  • Responsible for identifying opportunities, planning, organizing, and delivering professional education programs that advance professional skills and abilities, and provide upward mobility employment opportunities.
  • Responsible for identification and operationalization of K-12 academic offerings and initiatives, and implement launch of a strategic effort known as the SDSU “K-12 Campus.”

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree or higher in leadership, education, or related field completed by date of application.
  • 1‑3 years previous experience in a university office of continuing/distance education.
  • Experience in the areas of extended studies education services and/or programming.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills.
  • Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire and willingness to travel.
  • Authorized to work in the U.S. Sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • Experience in online education.
  • Experience in student advising.
Preferred Qualifications
  • An understanding of modern and emerging practices and trends in extended education.
