The Department of Construction and Concrete Industry Management at South Dakota State University invites applicants for the position of Department Head & Professor. This 12‑month, full‑time, tenure‑track role will lead the department’s academic programs, research, and external engagement.
Key Responsibilities- Provide leadership, strategy, and vision for the department and its programs in collaboration with faculty, staff, and other college and university administrators.
- Advance the department in education, student advisement, research and creative activities, and industry and community engagement.
- Supervise curriculum development, assessment, and accreditation activities through program and assessment coordinators and collaboration with faculty.
- Create a supportive environment for faculty, graduate and undergraduate student research and extramural funding.
- Recruit, mentor, develop, evaluate, and retain faculty, staff, and students.
- Manage faculty workload and plan student throughput through course schedule development.
- Advocate for the needs of the department’s programs, faculty, students, and staff.
- Develop and manage departmental budgets and coordinate fundraising efforts.
- Oversee management and maintenance of departmental facilities and resources.
- Maintain an active program of teaching, research, and scholarship consistent with the rank of Professor.
- Earned doctorate in construction management, civil engineering, or a closely related field by application date.
- A record of achievement in academic leadership, teaching, scholarship, research, and service commensurate with expectations for a tenured full professor.
- Financial‑management experience including revenue, expenditures, and/or budgeting.
- Experience in academic administration and/or parallel experience in the private industry sector.
- Effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Professional experience at the middle‑manager level or higher within the construction or concrete industry.
- Experience with recruitment and retention of faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds.
- Understanding of current and emerging trends in the construction and concrete industries, including workforce needs and interdisciplinary education and research.
- Experience implementing administrative policies.
- Experience building relationships with regional industry leaders, leading to collaboration.
- Experience leading and managing ABET and other programmatic accreditation procedures.

Relocation benefits are available per university guidelines. The salary for this position is commensurate with qualifications, starting at $175,000.
