Assistant, Associate or Full Professor of Veterinary Immunology

South Dakota State University (SDSU) Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences is seeking applications for a tenure track veterinary immunologist at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level. We are seeking an innovative educator and scientist with a research focus on mammalian food-animal infectious disease and immunological responses which will complement and enhance the current departmental research focus. This is a 9-month, full-time, benefits-eligible position located in Brookings, SD .

SDState is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university with over $94 million annual research expenditure, more than 200 academic programs and an enrollment of approximately 12,000 students. The university is part of a dynamic community for families, students, young professionals, and retirees, which offers an abundance of attractions and activities. The Department is within the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences and the position will report to the Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Department Head.

The Department includes the Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (ADRDL) and the Professional Program in Veterinary Medicine; a 2+2 DVM program in collaboration with the University of Minnesota. The ADRDL is a full service, accredited diagnostic laboratory with testing capabilities spanning molecular diagnostics, food safety, virology, bacteriology, clinical pathology, parasitology, histopathology and serology. The ADRDL is a member of the Food Emergency Response Network (FERN), FDA Genome "Trakr" Program, Veterinary Laboratory Investigation Response Network (VetLIRN) and the USDA National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) and works collaboratively with other faculty of other disciplines.

There is also an opportunity to become a member of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development Center for Biologics Research and Commercialization, a collaborative center emphasizing probiotic, vaccine and diagnostic assay development. The VBSD offers excellent new or recently renovated facilities along with a highly collaborative work environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The primary responsibility of this position is to develop and lead an active, independent and extramurally funded research program focused on veterinary immunology as related to infectious disease with emphasis on mammalian food animal species. Teaching an immunology course in the Professional Program in Veterinary Medicine is also an expectation, as well as educating and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, and post-doctoral scientists and laboratory staff.

SALARY:
The salary and rank are commensurate with qualifications, starting at $85,000 for Assistant Professor rank.

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Earned PhD in Biological Sciences or Veterinary Sciences; or D.V.M., V.M.D or equivalent veterinary degree AND an advanced degree in Biological or Veterinary Sciences or a closely related field with an emphasis in veterinary immunology by start date of appointment.
