South Dakota State University’s Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Physics is searching for a dedicated Lab Manager to join our team and support the department in delivering high quality education across all programs.
This position is a 12-month, full-time, benefits-eligible and located in Brookings.
The Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Physics provides students with a solid foundation in scientific disciplines through challenging coursework, laboratory explorations and research opportunities. Our recent graduates have gone on to work at local or national companies and research laboratories, attend medical schools, pursue graduate degrees and teach at the high school and university levels.

Key ResponsibilitiesThe Lab Manager is responsible for managing the laboratories of the Chemistry, Biochemistry and Physics department, delivering selected instructional content, and managing the equipment in the department, including highly sophisticated equipment, specifically the mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance facility equipment assets. This lab manager will supervise the stockroom technician and student assistants. The manager is also responsible for the safety program for the department.

- A master’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Physics or closely related field by hire date.
- Minimum of 1 year of related work experience directing laboratory operations.
- Experience with supervising or directing the work of others.
- Effective written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
- Knowledge of safety protocols.
- Experience with troubleshooting and maintenance of scientific equipment.
- A PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Physics or closely related field by application date.
- Previous teaching experience.
