Lead Boiler Operator

Physical Location of Position (City) Brookings

The Facilities & Services department of SD State University is seeking an experienced boiler operator to be a part of the leadership team in the heating plant. Responsibilities include performing maintenance and repairs on high‑pressure natural gas & fuel oil boilers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, and chillers, as well as related equipment to ensure equipment is operating as efficiently as possible.

Perform all boiler water chemical tests. Train new boiler plant personnel on the Central Heat Plant and Central Chiller Plant. Act as supervisor when supervisor is absent, fire boilers when boiler operator is absent and maintain Central Chillers.

The Energy Systems Division of Facilities and Services manages the production and distribution of the heating and cooling for campus. Our staff of engineers and technicians continually assess new technologies and energy options to assure SDSU utilizes the most efficient and reliable systems both environmentally and fiscally.

This position is located in Brookings, SD and is a 12‑month, full‑time, benefits‑eligible position. Must be authorized to work in the U.S. Sponsorship is not available for this position.

• Operate high pressure (150
  
  PSIG) gas and oil fired boilers in the Central Heat Plant, 5 ton chillers, heat exchangers, and cooling towers in the Central Chiller Plant, as well as other associated equipment in both plants.
• Maintenance and repair of hydronic heating and cooling systems across campus.
• Perform full range of maintenance activities and repairs on Central Heating Plant and Central Chiller Plant.
• Perform planned preventative maintenance on building equipment.
• Maintain heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems (HVAC).
• Delegate and assign work in supervisor’s absence.

• Boiler operation, methods, tools and equipment used.
• Hydronics and HVAC for both small and large commercial or institutional sized equipment.

• Maintain records and calculate boiler combustion efficiency.
• Pass Federal EPA method 9 visual emissions certification within 1 year of employment.
• Lead and train staff.
• Properly adjust and operate boilers and plant control systems to achieve high operating efficiency and minimal pollution while burning natural gas or oil.
• Troubleshoot, calibrate, repair and replace faulty instrumentation and control systems in the heating plant and throughout campus.
• Accurately maintain records.
• Calculate boiler combustion efficiency.
• Safely use tools.
• Work alone or as part of a team.
• Communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing.
• Lift up to 50 lbs.
• Work in confined spaces, distinguish colour, and read digital control panels, gauges and meters.

• Federal EPA method 9 visual emissions certification (must pass within 1 year of employment).
