Do you light up when a program comes together and a room full of people leave having learned something, made something, or found community? Are you someone who sees a library as a launchpad — not just a building — and wants to help shape what that means for your community?
The Public Library of Brookline is hiring an Adult Services Reference Librarian who will be a driving creative force behind our adult programming initiative. This isn't a "maintain what we've got" role — it's an opportunity to dream up, build, and deliver experiences that genuinely change how residents connect with their library and with each other.
What you'll be doing:You’ll plan and lead a wide range of programs — hands-on workshops, creative classes, community events, and outreach — while also doing the full, rich work of a reference librarian: collection development, readers advisory, research support, and technology assistance. You’ll be a familiar, trusted face to the patrons who count on us, and a bold experimenter who's always asking what else is possible?
Critically, this role is about forging partnerships, reaching new audiences, and finding fresh ways to bring meaningful experiences to adults of all ages.
You might be a great fit if you:- Get energized by working directly with people and building real relationships
- Have a knack for turning a good idea into a program people actually show up for
- Think creatively about community and connection — not just programming logistics
- Are excited to help shape something, not just maintain it
You'd be joining a talented, mission-driven team of librarians who believe deeply in what public libraries can do for a community. We're committed to expanding what's possible, and we want a colleague who shares that ambition.
Qualifications:Master's of Library and Information Science degree required; two – three years of experience in library operations is required, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge skills and abilities for this job. Language skills in Spanish, Chinese, or Russian is desirable.
Salary is $34.19 hourly/37 hours weekly with excellent benefits. Please apply with your resume and cover letter by July 6, 2026.
The Town of Brookline is an equal opportunity employer and dedicated to maintaining a diverse workforce.
