School Counselor 9‑12, 0.5 FTE (One‑Year Position)

Location: Brookline High School, Brookline, Massachusetts
Job DescriptionGeneral Responsibilities:
The School Counselor is responsible for assisting students in their overall experience during high school through consultations, programming, and direct services to students, teachers, and parents.
- Establish and maintain trusting relationships with students to provide equitable, individualized, and effective support.
- Provide academic advising and counseling to address students’ social‑emotional, personal, and academic needs.
- Collaborate with teachers in supporting students’ personal, social, and academic needs.
- Assist students and parents in understanding the student’s social, academic, and personal needs.
- Identify students requiring targeted or intensive mental health, social‑emotional, or medical support; make referrals to community agencies and collaborate with outside care providers.
- Provide post‑secondary guidance to students and families.
- Support students facing challenges with attendance, engagement, or academic performance, collaborating with teachers, parents, and administrators as needed.
- Collaborate closely with teachers, administration, academic support staff, clinical staff, special education staff, and parents to help students reach their academic and social‑emotional goals.
- Enroll new students in grades 9‑12.
- Assist students in technical program and academic course selection, ensuring that they are meeting graduation requirements and making selections that best match their post‑secondary plans.
- Write counselor recommendation letters for college.
- Participate in a variety of teams and programs to identify student needs and develop appropriate intervention plans, such as Student Support Teams, Student Intervention Team, Section 504, Special Education, etc.
- Implement guidance seminar curricula in grades 9‑12 and suggest revisions where appropriate.
- Assume such other duties as may be assigned by the Coordinator of School Counseling and Head of School.
- Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees
- Massachusetts certification in School Counseling; grades 5‑12
Staff position is a one year, 0.5 FTE, who reports directly to the coordinator of school counseling.
