Job Description

Anticipated Special education teacher opening at Brookline High School in the ACE Program, a regular education, competency-based program of 55 students in grades 10-12. (Please see attached program profile) Candidates should have experience working with students that have a wide range of mild-moderate disabilities and are comfortable working collaboratively on a small team. Responsibilities include providing direct instruction to students in academic strategies, content areas (small group instruction and/or inclusion co‑teaching within the general education setting), conducting curriculum-based assessments, writing IEPs and progress reports, general case management, communicating with parents, and attending IEP meetings.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Provide direct specialized core academic instruction/support in core content area in a small group setting or inclusion classroom
  • Provide high‑level individualized instruction across content areas and/or learning skills as needed to target IEP goals and objectives.
  • Plan and deliver engaging lessons with clear and measurable objectives based on the MA Curriculum Frameworks and student IEPs that are relevant to the appropriate curriculum and students in class.
  • Collaborate with general educators in the small group and co‑taught settings, implementing appropriate accommodations, planning, differentiating, and supporting the instruction for students with IEPs
  • Employ special education strategies and techniques during instruction to improve student skills (executive functioning, reading comprehension, written expression, self advocacy, etc.)
  • Manage class operation by setting high academic and behavioral expectations, implementing routines, anticipating potential problems and taking appropriate preventative measures.
  • Progress monitor student mastery of IEP goals and objectives using various assessments and data collection tools.
  • Conduct initial or reevaluation assessments as required by mandated timelines.
  • Maintain accurate and complete students records and prepare reports, IEPs on assigned caseload,as required by laws, district policies and administrative procedures.
  • Understand the Individual Education Plan of students in class and/or caseload, participate in team meetings and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Communicate and consult with parents, administrators and other professionals on students’ academic, social and behavioral progress.
  • Meet all deadlines in the IEP process, including but not limited to IEP meeting timelines, progress report timelines, etc.
  • Maintain professional competence by actively participating in staff development activities, curriculum development meetings, department meetings and other professional opportunities.
  • Coordinate, guide and direct the classroom including paraprofessionals and support staff working with students.
  • Fulfill department and school duties as assigned by high school administrators
  • Comply with all personnel policies of the Public Schools of Brookline
  • Fulfill other duties as directed by the special education administrator, principal or designee
Requirements

Qualifications:

  • DESE certification Teacher of students Moderate Disabilities, 5-12 - REQUIRED;
  • Must have strong oral and written communication skills
  • SEI Endorsement
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Additional Mass DESE certification in secondary content area (i.e. English 8-12, History 8-12, Math 8-12, Biology 8-12, Chemistry 8-12, etc.). Proficiency in math curriculum through Pre Calculus a plus.
