Ivy Street School offers nursing students the opportunity to gain hands‑on clinical experience in a specialized educational and residential setting serving adolescents and young adults with diverse learning, developmental, behavioral health, and medical needs. Under the guidance of a Registered Nurse preceptor, nursing students will observe and participate in the delivery of student-centered healthcare while developing skills in assessment, communication, care coordination, health education, and clinical decision-making.
This experience provides exposure to school nursing, community‑based care, chronic condition management, medication administration practices, interdisciplinary collaboration, and supporting young adults as they develop independence in managing their health.
Responsibilities & Learning Opportunities- Shadow Registered Nurses in daily nursing operations and student care.
- Observe and assist with health assessments and clinical observations.
- Learn about medication management processes and documentation.
- Participate in health education and wellness promotion activities.
- Observe care coordination with families, providers, and interdisciplinary teams.
- Learn strategies for supporting students with complex medical, developmental, and behavioral needs.
- Develop therapeutic communication skills with adolescents and young adults.
- Participate in case discussions and clinical reflection with the nursing team.
- Gain exposure to school‑based emergency response and health protocols.
- Support student independence and self‑advocacy related to healthcare needs.
- Patient assessment and clinical reasoning.
- Documentation and confidentiality practices.
- Medication safety awareness.
- Care planning and coordination.
- Trauma-informed and person-centered care approaches.
- Professional communication.
- Collaboration within a multidisciplinary team.
- Adaptation of nursing care for individuals with disabilities and neurodiversity.
Required:
- Current enrollment in an accredited nursing program (ADN, BSN, or graduate nursing program).
- Completion of foundational nursing coursework (as applicable).
- Professionalism, reliability, and commitment to patient-centered care.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow HIPAA guidelines.
- Interest in school nursing, pediatric/adolescent nursing, developmental disabilities, behavioral health, or community health.
The nursing student will be supervised by an experienced Registered Nurse preceptor. The preceptor will provide clinical guidance, education, feedback, and support while helping the student connect academic nursing concepts to real-world practice.
