Minimum Requirements

Requirements For Certified Applicants
  • Certification:
    Must be POST Certified.
  • Training:
    Must have completed the Full‑Time MPTC Police Academy. Candidates certified through the Bridge Academy only are not eligible.
  • Background & Examinations:
    Must pass an extensive background investigation, medical examination, and written and oral psychological evaluation.
  • Non‑Smoker:
    Pursuant to M.G.L. Chapter 41, Section 101A, candidate(s) must be a non‑smoker for a period of one (1) year prior to appointment.
  • Residency:
    Candidate must establish residency within 25 miles of the limits of the Town of Brookline within one (1) year from the date of appointment.
Additional Requirements For Lateral Transfer Applicants
  • Massachusetts Officer Status

    Required:

    Only applicants currently employed full‑time as police officers in a Massachusetts police department are eligible for lateral transfer consideration.
  • Out‑of‑State Applicants:
    Must hold current Full‑Time Police Officer status, and be a full‑time enforcement officer from any U.S. law enforcement agency in order to apply to the Department as a Lateral Transfer.
    • Out‑of‑state Lateral Transfer applicants are required to obtain an Advisory Letter from the Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) and upload it to their Supporting Documents folder…
