Job DetailsThe Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication in the College of Liberal Arts invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position to begin the fall semester 2025 (08/25/2025).
Appointment will be 100% time over the nine‑month academic year (late‑August to late‑May) at the rank of tenure‑track assistant professor. Salary and start‑up package are competitive.
ScopeWe are seeking outstanding scholars with research and teaching interests that address contemporary issues in journalism practice and the profession, including issues related to artificial intelligence, data science, data visualization and reporting on social issues. A preference will be given to individuals with quantitative social science expertise using emerging methods of data science to advance applied studies of journalism. The School seeks applicants whose research, practice, teaching, and service will further the undergraduate and graduate curriculum in journalism practice, and contribute to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education and at the University of Minnesota.
Responsibilities- Develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses, including interactive and data journalism/data visualization, news reporting and writing, and other professionally oriented journalism skills courses.
- Teach courses in areas related to journalism and advanced research methods; contribute to new curriculum involving AI and data science and reporting.
- Project and publish original research with potential for external funding.
- Advise students at the M.A. and Ph.D. level.
- Contribute service appropriate for the rank of appointment to the school, college, University, and profession.
- Participate in professional journalism development, including use of artificial intelligence and emerging media.
- Outstanding promise of sustaining a vigorous program of original research and publication with potential for external funding.
- Promise of excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching and advising.
- Capacity and commitment to teach undergraduate courses in interactive and data journalism/data visualization, news reporting and writing.
- Preferred: professional journalism experience and the capacity to contribute to the ongoing development and delivery of a rapidly evolving emerging‑media focused professional journalism curriculum, including use of artificial intelligence.
